Google Pixel 9 vs Pixel 8 performance comparison: how much faster is it now?

The Google Pixel 9 (review) has been unveiled in India, featuring several upgrades and enhancements over its predecessor. A major highlight is the new Tensor G4 chipset, which promises enhanced cores, higher GPU frequencies, and advanced neural processing capabilities, making it Google’s fastest and most powerful SoC yet, on paper. AnTuTu

The new Tensor G4 chipset assists Pixel 9 scoring roughly 2 lakhs more than its predecessor Pixel 8. While this isn’t a significant improvement, the Pixel 9 is expected to deliver enhanced processing and graphics performance.

Geekbench

Geekbench also rates the Pixel 9 as superior in task performance. The device achieves higher scores of 1,711 in single-core and 4,545 in multi-core tests, compared to the Pixel 8, which peaked at 1,045 in single-core and 3,294 in multi-core tests.

CPU Throttle

The Pixel 9 performance throttles just as much as the Pixel 8 in the Burnout CPU throttle test. Although the latest model shows a slight performance improvement, both smartphones are expected to handle intense workloads equally well.

Gaming

Nevertheless, the Pixel 9 is notably better than its previous-gen model in terms of thermal management. During our lab test, the handset heated up by 18.4 degrees on aggregate, whereas the Pixel 8’s temperature rose to 23.3 degrees after playing BGMI, Call of Duty, and Real Racing for 30 minutes each. Just so you know both phones were tested with similar graphics, brightness, and volume settings.

Verdict

Besides throttling, the Pixel 9’s performance has improved signifcantly over the Pixel 8. The handset offers superior processing and graphics performance in synthetic AnTuTu and Geekbench benchmarking apps. The smartphone also has an edge in thermal management, managing heat more efficiently during extended gaming sessions.
