Google Pixel 9 Pro vs Apple iPhone 16 Pro performance comparison: which Pro smartphone delivers better performance?

The Google Pixel 9 Pro and Apple iPhone 16 Pro are the latest flagships by their respective brands and pack top-of-the-line features for phones in 2024. The phones are also priced quite similarly at Rs 1,09,999 and Rs 1,19,999, respectively. The Pixel 9 Pro features the latest Google Tensor G4 chipset, while the iPhone 16 Pro comes with the Apple A18 Pro chipset. In the real-world, their performance output is quite similar, but when we look at their synthetic benchmark scores, the Apple iPhone 16 Pro takes the lead over its competitor in terms of performance.

We judged the performance of both devices using popular benchmarking tools like AnTuTu (overall system performance), Geekbench (CPU efficiency for single and multi-core tasks), Burnout (sustained performance under heavy load), and gaming (FPS consistency and thermal management during gameplay). These tests help us determine how the phones handle real-world tasks and demanding conditions.

Do note, iOS is not compatible with some of our regular benchmark apps like Burnout, so we used the 3D Mark Extreme stress test to check the CPU stability.

Pixel 9 Pro iPhone 16 Pro
AnTuTu score 11,79,756 17,47,550
Geekbench Single Core 1980
3317
Geekbench Multi Core 4757 8115
CPU throttle score 38.8 percent  63.9 percent
Gaming score (overall temperature increase after 90 minutes) 23.9 degrees Celsius  14.1 degrees Celsius

Verdict

  • Antutu test: The iPhone 16 Pro has a significantly higher AnTuTu score in comparison to the Pixel 9 Pro in all the testing parameters. This implies the former will also deliver a better performance output in day-to-day use and while performing demanding tasks.
  • Geekbench test: In the Geekbench test, the iPhone 16 Pro’s single-core and multi-core performance are nearly double that of the Pixel 9 Pro. Single-core performance measures everyday tasks like web browsing and app loading, while multi-core performance focuses on more demanding activities like gaming, video editing, and photo editing.
  • Based on these benchmark numbers, the iPhone 16 Pro will deliver better performance in all these tasks than the Pixel 9 Pro.
  • CPU throttle test: The CPU throttle test is a great way to check how a phone’s chipset performs under heavy stress. Using the burnout and 3D Mark apps, we judged the sustained performance output of both phones.
  • You can easily see the Pixel 9 Pro’s sustained performance is quite poor at just under 40 percent (Burnout benchmark score), while the iPhone 16 Pro maintains a decent level of sustained performance output at nearly 65 percent (we used the 3D Mark Wildlife Extreme stress test since Burnout didn’t work on the iPhone). Thus, the iPhone 16 Pro will deliver better performance over longer periods of use.
  • Gaming test: In the gaming tests, both phones do a decent job and are capable of playing demanding titles like BGMI and COD: Mobile at their maximum graphical settings. The iPhone 16 Pro offers slightly better gaming performance in these games compared to the Pixel 9 Pro and also registers a much lower temperature increase during gaming.

In conclusion, the iPhone 16 Pro is the clear winner in our performance test, as it outperforms the Pixel 9 Pro in all the synthetic benchmark tests and real-world use. If you’re looking for a capable flagship phone that delivers excellent performance, you’re better off choosing the iPhone 16 Pro over the Pixel 9 Pro.
