Nothing Phone 2a Plus vs Realme 13 Pro camera comparison: better companion for photos?

The Nothing Phone 2a Plus (review), with its triple 50MP camera system and sleek design, will likely attract several camera-focused customers. However, at Rs 27,999, it competes against the Rs 26,999-worth Realme 13 Pro (review), which is also well-regarded for its camera performance.

We’ve already compared the two smartphones’ processor capabilities and battery performance, and the competition so far is almost neck-and-neck. In this dedicated camera performance, we will analyse which phone takes better photos in brightly lit and dim lighting conditions.

Daylight

At first glance, Realme 13 Pro’s output may appear more appealing with its bright treatment and punchy colours. The Nothing Phone 2a Plus, on the other hand, captures the gloomy day more accurately. Overall, both photos offer similar dynamic range and details in the background.

However, the Realme 13 Pro has softened details of areas, likely to reduce noise. In contrast, the Phone 2a Plus captures sharper, more readable signs in the background. Even the bush in the foreground appears more natural.

I even took photos in 2x mode and noticed a similar treatment. This time, Realme 13 Pro struggled to maintain a consistent colour treatment.

Winner: Nothing Phone 2a Plus

Ultra-wide

Based on megapixels, the Phone 2a Plus is ahead of the Realme 13 Pro with a 50MP ultra-wide sensor vs 8MP sensor. This definitely proves to be working for the former.

If we compare the two photos, neither maintains a consistent colour science as the primary camera. The Realme 13 Pro offers a wider field of view, but its details are once again sketchy.

The Phone 2a Plus provides a decent dynamic range and more readable signboards in the background. It again tries to capture real-life colours, which I appreciate.

Portrait

Nothing Phone 2a Plus and Realme 13 Pro both leverage the primary camera for portrait shots. You can achieve a natural-looking shallow depth of field with the regular photo mode, but the portrait mode provides a more social media-ready output.

This time, the Phone 2a Plus upped the brightness, which may appear more aesthetically pleasing. However, I am equally happy with Realme 13 Pro’s accurate skin tone detection.

The Realme 13 Pro also provided better edge detection to separate the subject from the blurry background. Keep in mind that both phones softened facial details, which won’t look good if you crop the image on Instagram.

Winner: Realme 13 Pro

Selfie (portrait enabled)

The Phone 2a Plus continues to brighten the subject’s face but in a good way. The phone also captured better facial details this time.

Unlike the portrait shot with the primary camera, the Realme 13 Pro struggled with edge detection with the selfie shooter. Its selfie shot also features high contrast, which hides the details of the cap.

Winner: Nothing Phone 2a Plus

Low-light

While both smartphones exhibited a decent performance in bright conditions, their low-light performance surely needs improvements.

The Nothing Phone 2a Plus and Realme 13 Pro struggled to balance ambient lights. The overall sharpness and stability of the photos are average.

The Phone 2a Plus performed better with its brighter output, making the building details more noticeable. In contrast, the Realme 13 Pro struggled to balance the exposure, resulting in an image that looks extremely dull and flat.

Winner: Nothing Phone 2a Plus

Low-light (Night mode enabled)

With night mode enabled, there’s some relief but nothing substantial. The Realme 13 Pro’s image looks much better, though it features high contrast, which majorly impacts the windows of the building. Even advertisements on the build are sketchy and lack stability.

The Nothing Phone 2a Plus addressed these issues more efficiently. However, both struggle to manage the ambient light, which to be fair, is a common issue with smartphones under Rs 30,000.

Winner: Nothing Phone 2a Plus

Verdict

Based on our camera test, the Nothing Phone 2a Plus was ahead of the Realme 13 Pro. In some areas, you can call it a tie between the two smartphones depending on the colour treatment you prefer in your photos.

However, the Phone 2a Plus’s triple 50MP camera system generally captures more details, which can be quite useful if you crop an image for social media or other projects. Personally, I prefer Phone 2a Plus’ close-to-natural colour treatment more.
