Upcoming Samsung VR headset spotted on Geekbench with key specifications

Highlights
  • Samsung device with SM-I130 model number could be the headset, or the controller as per speculations.
  • Its 16GB RAM on Geekbench suggests it could be the headset.
  • Under the hood, the device seems to have a Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset.

Samsung is said to be working on a yet-to-be-named VR (Virtual reality) headset to take on the likes of the Meta Quest lineup and Apple Vision Pro. 91mobiles has spotted the said device on the Geekbench website. The listing reveals the Samsung headset’s key specifications and hints the device is getting closer to launch.

From the listing, we learn the device runs on Android 14 and has a hexa-core processor with a base clock speed of 2.36 GHz. From the looks of it, this could be the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 SoC (launched at the beginning of this year). As per this chip’s product page, it has 4 + 2 performance cores with a frequency of up to 2.4 GHz and an Adreno 740 GPU.

Previously, noted tipster Roland Quandt had revealed the Samsung VR headset could carry the model number SM-I130. Meanwhile, there’s some speculation that the full-blown headset could have the model number SM-I610 and SM-I130 may be its controller. This speculation doesn’t make sense in this context as the Geekbench posting tells the device has 16GB RAM. A controller wouldn’t need this much memory.

Samsung VR headset: what else we know

As per a recent Samsung VR headset patent spotted by MySmartPrice, the device could:

  • Display virtual avatars like Apple Vision Pro Personas. This could perhaps show up to other users on the call. Samsung must be using multiple sensors on the headset to collect information from surroundings.
  • Work with other Samsung ecosystem products like wireless headphones and smartwatches.
  • Keep track of heart rate and calories consumed. This could perhaps help in creating a health profile for workouts and exercises.
  • Be equipped with table stakes sensors like an accelerometer, gyroscope, camera module, and infrared sensor. This could be used to track the position and movement of the user. Speaking of which it could also have a built-in navigation system.
  • Also come with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support.

While these are early details only, and we await more concrete details about the device.
