Google Pixel 8a vs Pixel 8 battery comparison: which Pixel lasts longer?

The Google Pixel 8a (review) was launched in India just a couple of weeks ago as an affordable version of the standard Google Pixel 8 (review). The smartphone’s starting price of Rs 52,999 is slightly steep for the Indian smartphone market, especially considering you can currently purchase the vanilla Pixel 8 for around Rs 69,999. On that front, we did a performance and camera comparison between both phones to find out how the Pixel 8a compares to the standard Pixel 8. Today, we’ll be doing a battery comparison between both devices to find out which compact phone offers a superior battery life.

Here are the battery specifications of both smartphones:

PCMark

The first test on the list is the PCMark battery life benchmark. It gauges the time it takes for a smartphone’s battery to drop from 100 percent to under 20 percent. The Google Pixel 8a registered a time of 12 hours and 12 minutes on the test, while the Pixel 8 logged 11 hours and 19 minutes on the test. The benchmark result suggests that the Pixel 8a should offer comparatively better battery life.

Streaming test

Next up, we played the same 30-minute YouTube video on both phones at 50 percent brightness and volume level to gauge the battery drain. The Pixel 8a experienced a battery drop of 5 percent, which translates to roughly 225mAh absolute drain, while the Pixel 8 dropped 4 percent, which is about 183mAh absolute drain. The Pixel 8 wins the streaming test.

Gaming test

For the gaming test, we played 3 graphically demanding games on both devices for 30 minutes each to find out their respective battery drain. Both the Pixel 8a and Pixel 8 showcased a battery drain of 23 percent each (8 percent average battery drain). If we talk about the absolute drain, the Pixel 8a registered a drain of 1033mAh battery, while the Pixel 8 logged a drain of 1052mAh. Considering the absolute drain numbers, the Pixel 8 wins the comparison with a very slight margin.

Charging speed

The Pixel 8a supports up to 18W fast charging via USB C, while the Pixel 8 comes with 27W wired fast charging support. We used a third-party charger to test the charging speed of both phones. The Pixel 8a took about 94 minutes to recharge completely from 20 to 100 percent battery capacity, while the Pixel 8 took 83 minutes to achieve the same. The Pixel 8 wins the charging speed test.

Verdict

Based on our comparison, the Pixel 8 emerges as the clear winner in our battery tests. It offers faster charging speeds and comes with a slightly more resilient battery that manages to outlast the Pixel 8a. If battery life is a key factor in your decision, the Pixel 8 is the better choice for a Pixel smartphone.

While the Pixel 8a does lose the comparison, the difference between both smartphones was quite minimal, and that remains the case when it comes to their battery capacities as well. So, if you’re on a budget and feel that the Pixel 8 is a bit more expensive than what you’re comfortable spending, the Pixel 8a is still a compelling option.
