12.9-inch iPad Air could sport a pro-grade Mini LED display: report
Apple could equip the upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Air with a Mini LED display. This will be an upgrade over the IPS LCD screen on the current-gen model. Previously, this feature was present on the iPad Pro lineup and as that’s rumoured to adopt OLED technology, the Air gets the hand-me-down, viz., Mini LED screen.
12.9-inch iPad Air with Mini LED display: why it’s exciting
- This scoop comes from Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants. He says, “The upcoming 12.9″ iPad Air has a MiniLED display”.
- Mini LED is a step up from IPS LCD screens. Since it uses a denser array of “mini” LEDs, there are more dimming zones and the iPad Air will be able to better tune brightness, blacks, and contrasts at various regions on the screen. In a nutshell, the iPad Air’s HDR capabilities and overall picture quality will improve. This is also expected to offer power efficiency gains.
- However, it’s a costlier tech and Apple could perhaps even it off with economies of scale. The Cupertino brand is said to have some leftover Mini LED panels from the current-gen 12.9-inch iPad Pro. So, it may use them.
- Meanwhile, the iPad Pro could upgrade to an OLED panel which offers per-pixel lighting and so even better brightness and contrast control. It, thus offers deeper blacks, superior viewing angles, and better power efficiency. This iPad Pro could also be slimmer.
