Apple working on 11-inch, 13-inch iPad Pros with OLED displays and 4TB storage: report
Apple is reportedly working on iPad Pro models with hybrid OLED displays in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, with up to 4TB storage. These models could replace the current-gen 11-inch iPad Pro with a conventional LCD and 12.9-inch iPad Pro with a mini-LED panel. Once the hybrid OLED iPad Pro models launch, these old iPad Pro models could be discontinued.
Upcoming iPad Pro models: OLED display benefits and more
Per the report by DigiTimes, the hybrid OLED screens on these new iPad Pro models would consist of both flexible and rigid materials, resulting in a thinner and lighter form factor compared to their predecessors.
Also, OLED means the new iPad Pro models could be better in brightness, contrast ratio, colour accuracy, and power efficiency than LCD iPad Pro models.
Even the refresh rate of OLEDs can go lower than LCDs. So, the present iPad Pro models (which currently refresh at 24Hz-120Hz) could drop as low as 10Hz or below, thus aiding in lower power consumption. We have seen this on the iPhone 14 Pro whose OLED screen refreshes at about 1Hz in the Always-on Display (AoD) mode.
Besides the OLED benefits, the 13-inch model offers a bit more screen real estate. If rumours are to be believed, the bezels could also get thinner in these or on one of the future generations of iPad Pros.
Under the hood, these iPads could be running on a M3 chip. Another tipster named Revegnus suggests the OLED iPad Pros could support 4TB of storage, up from the current 2TB available in the outgoing model.
So, that would be Mac-level power and to make this “look even more like a laptop than the current setup,” it could come with a new Magic Keyboard with a larger trackpad size.
OLED iPad Pro release timeline (expected)
The new hybrid OLED iPad Pro models are expected to launch in 2024, possibly in March or June. The current models could be discontinued. The report claims Apple suppliers would stop shipping the LCD iPad Pro variants by mid-2024. However since OLED brings a lot of benefits, there will be excitement for these new iPads. Let’s see.
In the meantime, all eyes are on the Apple September 12th iPhone 15 launch event. We are not expecting any iPad announcement at this event, save for perhaps a stable iPadOS 17 release.
