iPhone 15 Ultra to house “almost 1-inch” camera sensor, claims tipster
Apple is known to take its time when it comes to upgrading iPhones with newer hardware, but with the iPhone 15 Ultra (which reports say would be the moniker of the highest-end model of the iPhone 15 series) we could see some major camera changes. According to a new leak, the iPhone 15 Ultra is said to pack a bigger sensor than its predecessor, which is claimed to be “almost as good as a 1-inch sensor.”
The iPhone 15 Pro Max, which reports claim will be called the Phone 15 Ultra, will reportedly house the Sony IMX903, according to Ice Universe. The Sony IMX903 is almost 1 inch, 1/1.14 inches to be precise. In comparison, the iPhone 14 Pro Max houses the IM803 sensor, which is 1/1.28 inches in size. A bigger camera sensor will naturally result in better image and higher resolution as it lets more light come in.

There are more upgrades rumoured for the iPhone 15 Ultra’s camera, such as a periscope lens that will be capable of taking photos with up to 6x zoom. This will be done without any compromise to the image quality, which is usually the case with traditional camera zooming capabilities. While iPhones are known to boast great cameras, they don’t offer long zoom ranges against the competition. However, periscope lenses in phone cameras are already seen in a number of smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy S23 series.
A bigger sensor and periscope lens are however said to be limited only to the iPhone 15 Ultra which would be the top-tier model in the upcoming iPhone lineup. There are three more iPhones in the works namely the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro. This could mean that we might not see any camera hardware upgrade on the iPhone 15 Pro, but it’s still too early to rule out anything.
