Can the Samsung Galaxy S23 series survive a 6-feet fall?
Samsung‘s Galaxy S23 series of flagship smartphones have been tasked to take forward the company’s ambitions to use sustainable materials to reduce the negative impact on the environment. However, the question lies in whether the quest to achieve eco-friendliness has come at the cost of durability. Allstate Protection Plans (formerly Square Trade) is an insurance firm that has compared the Galaxy S22 series and Galaxy S23 series on the durability aspect. The verdict says that the Samsung Galaxy S23 series is similar to or more durable than its predecessor.
Samsung Galaxy S23 series drop tested from 6 feet height
The Samsung Galaxy S23 series has been subjected to a series of drop tests from a 6-feet height using a DropBot robot over a sidewalk (footpath). The study has been undertaken by the insurance firm Allstate Protection Plans (formerly Square Trade) and its findings suggest that the new Galaxy S23 series is similar to or more durable than the last generation Galaxy S22 series despite having recycled materials in its build.
The Samsung Galaxy S23 series takes Samsung’s sustainability quest forward and has components made out of recycled glass and ocean-bound plastic. The face-down drop tests conducted using the DropBot robot found the vanilla Samsung Galaxy S23 end up with a shattered screen with raised glass and loose glass. The larger twin, Samsung Galaxy S23+, ended up with a cracked screen with raised glass and frame damage. The largest of the devices, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, performed well and suffered hairline cracks and a cracked edge after the drop.
When the devices were subjected to a backdown drop, the Galaxy S23 ended up with broken back glass and frame damage. The bigger Galaxy S23+ during the same test incurred hairline cracks and frame damage to its rear panel. The biggest of them all, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, bounced after the fall and ended up with extensive damage. It had a shattered lens, cracks, and minor frame damage.
The conclusion that was drawn suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra held up well despite its size and performed adequately better than its S23 siblings. The Galaxy S23 series also performed better than last year’s Samsung Galaxy S22 series. However, the testers recommend that users use a screen protector and a case to prevent damage in case of drops.
