6G network could be available in the market by 2030 as the industrial metaverse expands, said Pekka Lundmark – president and CEO of Nokia. The Nokia CEO stated this during a Davos panel discussion – strategic outlook on the digital economy (via ET Telecom). Lundmark believes that the smartphones we know and use these days will not be the most common interface by 2030. Further, he also mentions that the physical work and the virtual world (VR) will grow together simultaneously.

Nokia predicts that the 6G standardisation could begin in 2025, and later in 2030, it could be released commercially. Let’s take a detailed look at what we can expect from the 6G network.

6G launch by 2030?

The Nokia CEO said, “Right now, we’re all building 5G networks, as we know, but by the time quantum computing is maturing for commercial applications, we’re going to be talking about 6G. By 2030, definitely, the smartphone as we know it today will not anymore be the most common interface.”

Further, Pekka Lundmark believes that the “physical world and the digital world will grow together.” This means that a user can go into the VR world-changing something in the real physical world. Additionally, Ruth Parlot, Alphabet’s chief financial officer, was also on the panel and predicted that people would soon be able to translate conversations using augmented reality (AR) glasses.

Nokia anticipates that phase one of 6G standardisation will begin in 2025, with the first 6G specification appearing in 3GPP Release 21 by 2028. Commercial deployments are expected to begin around 2030. The next standard advancements for 5G, 5G-Advanced, will accelerate 6G. It will be a major priority for 3GPP in Releases 18 and 19, with expanded capabilities, increased efficiency, and improved user experience.
