Facebook’s Meta announces Project Nazare AR glasses prototype

Highlights
  • Meta, formerly Facebook, has announced its first consumer AR glasses, Project Nazare.
  • The glasses offer familiar AR experiences such as communicating with friends in virtual windows and playing multiplayer scenes using avatars.
  • Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg clarified the AR glasses are still a work in progress.

Apart from introducing the new Project Cambria VR headset, Meta, formerly known as Facebook, also revealed the codename of its first consumer AR glasses, Project Nazare. The company has also shown a demo video of Nazare that included some familiar AR experiences such as communicating with friends in virtual windows and playing in multiplayer settings with digital avatars. However, Meta hasn’t shown off the picture of the hardware just yet but we can certainly expect more information soon.

Talking about Project Nazare, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the glasses are the company’s “first full augmented reality glasses,” but clarified that they are still a work in progress. “There’s a lot of technical work to get this form factor and experience right. We have to fit hologram displays, projectors, batteries, radios, custom silicon chips, cameras, speakers, sensors to map the world around you, and more into glasses that are about 5mm thick. So we still have a ways to go with Nazare, but we are making good progress,” said the CEO.

Facebook’s connect blog says the Project Nazare glasses are still a few years out. “Our first fully-fledged AR glasses — Project Nazare — are still a few years out, but we’re excited by the progress we’ve made and look forward to the road ahead.” By this, we can understand the company is currently working on the glasses but is making significant progress.

Facebook last month has released a pair of glasses in partnership with Ray-Ban, dubbed as the Ray-Ban Stories. But then again, they are not real AR glasses as they feature just a built-in camera and microphone for point-of-view photo and video recording.
