These 4 Xiaomi Redmi smartphones will not get MIUI 12 update

Highlights
  • Redmi 7, Redmi Y3, Redmi 6A, and Redmi 6 will not get MIUI 12 update
  • The official reason cited is ‘compatibility and performance issues’
  • Users will now have to look at third-party alternatives if they want to upgrade to the latest Android version

While the MIUI 12 update has made its way to a lot of Xiaomi phones, several handsets continue to run older versions of the software. Given the sheer number of smartphones Xiaomi has on the market, it can get somewhat cumbersome to track when a particular model will get major software updates. That is why Xiaomi planned on rolling out the MIUI 12 update in phases. Initially, the Redmi 7, Redmi Y3, Redmi 6A, Redmi 6 were to receive the software in the second phase alongside the Redmi Note 8 Pro, POCO F1, and others. However, Xiaomi has now walked back on its statement and confirmed that the four smartphones are not eligible for the MIUI 12 update.

A (now deleted) post on the official MIUI forums states that the Redmi 7, Redmi Y3, Redmi 6A, Redmi 6 will not receive the MIUI 12 update due to ‘compatibility and performance issues.’ Just what those issues are exactly hasn’t been specified. The Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A’s dated hardware might not have been able to handle MIUI 12 properly, and that’s ok. The Redmi 7 and Redmi Y3, on the other hand, are relatively new devices that launched with MIUI 10 out of the box, so one can’t help but wonder why they weren’t eligible for the MUI 12 update.

Redmi 7, Redmi Y3, Redmi 6A, Redmi 6 users will now be stuck on MIUI 11 for perpetuity. However, Xiaomi has made it quite easy for users to unlock the bootloaders on their devices, which opens up the possibilities of sideloading third-party ROMs. Additionally, Xiaomi has a fairly vibrant and active developer community, so one can also expect (mostly) bug-free software and regular updates.
