Pixel 4a, Realme X3 SuperZoom in the fray for Best Mid-range Camera Phone of 2020 at Indian Gadget Awards

With smartphones replacing digital cameras for most people in the last decade, having a worthy camera phone by your side for capturing all your memories is an absolute necessity. The best cameras can arguably be found in flagship smartphones, but the ones on mid-range devices aren’t very far behind, which makes the mid-range camera phone category a fiercely competitive field. You can pick up some really capable camera phones around or under Rs 35,000 right now, and those are the ones we’ll be focusing on in this category.

Best Mid-Range Camera Phone of 2020 is one of the 22 award categories in this year’s Indian Gadget Awards. As the biggest tech awards event in the country, it is being judged this year by a group of 30 experts from the Indian tech media community. Over 100 nominees have made the cut in 2020, making the jury’s job extremely difficult. Let’s take a look at the ones that have made the cut for the category of best mid-range camera phone of 2020.

OnePlus Nord

OnePlus Nord being a nominee in this category is a no-brainer. The phone offers the same OIS-equipped 48MP wide camera as the OnePlus 8 Pro but at a much lower price. It’s got remarkable ultra-wide, macro, and depth cameras as well. Furthermore, the phone excels at delivering low-light shots thanks to its Nightscape mode, which captures nine different pictures at varying exposures before stacking them together to render the final image. The Nord boasts of dual selfie cameras as well, offering a 32MP main sensor and an 8MP ultra-wide one for those groupfies with all your friends.

Google Pixel 4a

The Pixel 4a continues the Pixel line’s legacy of delivering top-notch photos with a barebones camera setup that is more than enough to do the job. It’s got a single 12MP f/1.7 camera on its back that returns spectacular shots no matter what kind of lighting condition you are in. Google’s HDR+ mode still remains unbeaten and even unrivalled after all these years. Moreover, the Pixel 4a’s Night Sight and Astrophotography modes are like a cherry on top. And the phone doesn’t even need a second camera to offer stunning portrait shots.

Vivo V20 Pro

Vivo V20 Pro is another smartphone that deserves a place on this list. On the back of the Vivo V20 Pro is a 64MP wide camera for crisp, high-resolution shots in all lighting conditions. It’s accompanied by an 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 2MP depth sensor that aids in both portrait and macro photography. That said, you also get other slick features like Motion Autofocus for keeping the focus tagged on your subject while capturing videos and the Smart Zoom trait for adjusting camera movement to keep your subject in the prime spot. The phone is also known for its 44MP Eye Autofocus dual front camera setup, which makes possible everything from night selfies, 4K videos, and ultra-wide selfies.

Realme X3 Superzoom

The Realme X3 Superzoom is distinguished by its 8MP periscope-style telephoto camera that can offer 5x optical zoom on its own. But by using the other resources onboard, it can reach up to 60x hybrid zoom to take you extremely close to your subjects. Now there’s no doubt that the picture quality will suffer in such circumstances, but the phone holds its own very well at around 30x zoom and even a few notches beyond it, which is a big achievement. Its other cameras include a 64MP wide shooter, an 8MP ultra-wide unit, and a 2MP macro camera. Beyond all this, a Starry Mode lets you indulge in astrophotography, while Nightscape 4.0 excels in low-light imaging. The Realme X3 Superzoom even has a dual front camera setup for ultra-wide or group selfies.

Samsung Galaxy M51

There’s a lot on offer with the Samsung Galaxy M51. The quad-camera setup on its back includes a 64MP f/1.8 wide camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a couple of 5MP snappers for delivering macro and portrait shots. Those being the camera specs, the features are all the more exciting. They include Single Take — that utilises all its cameras at once to deliver six outputs with just once click — and My Filters, which lets you create filters of your own to apply to your images anytime you want. The Night Hyperlapse mode is exactly what it sounds like, while the Smart Selfie Angle mode makes the most of the 32MP front camera by automatically switching to a wider view when there are more people in the frame.
