Motorola Edge 50 vs Nothing Phone (2a) Plus camera comparison: which smartphone captures the best shots?

The Motorola Edge 50 (review) offers one of the most versatile cameras in its price segment. The handset features a triple rear camera setup with a 50MP Sony LYTIA 700C primary sensor, a 13MP ultrawide lens with autofocus that also captures macro images and a 10MP 3x telephoto lens. The primary and telephoto lenses are equipped with OIS, further enhanced by AI to provide stability for pictures and videos. For selfies, the smartphone boasts a 32MP camera in a punch-hole design. How does this camera setup perform in the real world? To find out, we compared the smartphone’s images with those from the similarly priced Nothing Phone (2a) Plus (review), and here are the results.

Daylight

The Motorola Edge 50 primary camera captures more contrasty images in daylight than the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus, which delivers brighter results. This leads to superior details around the shadowy areas, but the dynamic range looks underwhelming. The Motorola smartphone excels at capturing images with more prominent shadows. However, both smartphones boost colours to make the images more appealing.

Winner: Tie

Ultrawide

The Motorola Edge 50 and Nothing Phone (2a) Plus both offer ultrawide images with consistent colour science to their respective primary cameras. The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus produces brighter images, while the Motorola Edge 50 delivers more contrast-rich, social media-ready photos. However, the larger 50MP sensor on the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus, compared to the Motorola Edge 50’s 13MP ultrawide camera, excels at capturing finer details.

Winner: Nothing Phone (2a) Plus

Portrait

The Motorola Edge 50 offers four different focal points: 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm, for portraits, whereas Nothing Phone (2a) Plus boasts just two: 24mm and 50mm. The above portraits were taken with 50mm focal points on both smartphones. As can be observed, the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus crops the subject from the background better than the Motorola smartphone despite the little warping around the edges. Having said that, the Motorola Edge 50 provides better skin tones and facial detailing, which could be attributed to its dedicated telephoto lens for portraits.

Winner: Tie

Selfie

The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus captures selfies with superior facial details, though with a slightly reddish skin tone. In contrast, the Motorola Edge 50 delivers more accurate skin tones, but the level of detail falls short compared to its competitor.

Winner: Tie

Lowlight (night mode)

Since the Motorola Edge 50 lacks the option to capture low-light images without relying on long exposure mode, we used night mode on both smartphones. The Nothing Phone (2a) Plus produces brighter, more visually appealing and shaper images than the Motorola smartphone. However, a few elements in the image appear more artistic than natural. The Motorola Edge 50, on the other hand, keeps things closer to reality, but the details go for a toss.

Winner: Nothing Phone (2a) Plus

Verdict

The Motorola Edge 50 and Nothing Phone (2a) Plus each have their strengths and weaknesses, leading to close competition in several areas.

  • The Motorola Edge 50 excels in capturing contrasty images with better dynamic range, near-accurate skin tones, and superior facial detailing. It also holds an edge with its telephoto lens and an ultrawide sensor equipped with autofocus for macro shots.
  • On the other hand, the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus delivers brighter, more visually appealing images and outshines Motorola with its superior ultrawide and low-light performance.

Ultimately, the choice between the two comes down to your personal preferences.
