Highlights
  • Google is reportedly planning to switch to an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor for the Pixel 9 series.
  • This would be an upgrade over the optical fingerprint sensor.
  • The Pixel 9 series is launching on August 13th.

The Google Pixel 9 series launch is scheduled for August 13th. This time three phones are expected including the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and a new Pixel 9 Pro XL. Much has been revealed about the new Pixels and now a report claims that Google is planning to use an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. This would be an upgrade over the optical fingerprint sensor on the current Pixels.

Google Pixel 9 to feature ultrasonic fingerprint sensor

The entire Pixel 9 lineup will feature an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, according to a report by Android Authority. More specifically, the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor Google plans to use is the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008), which is also used on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. All Pixel 9 models will feature the new fingerprint sensor but not the Pixel Fold, which will continue with the power button.

How is an ultrasonic fingerprint better?

Google currently uses an optical fingerprint sensor for its Pixels. While this does the job it has certain limitations like slow speed, less accuracy, and can easily be affected by any moisture or dirt. Another issue is optical fingerprint sensors not working properly in low-light environments as you won’t be able to locate it properly.

Ultrasonic fingerprint sensors are not just faster but safer too in comparison to optical ones. It’s also easier to use one in low-light conditions. Most Android flagships and premium mid-range phones offer ultrasonic fingerprint sensors so it makes sense for Google to adopt it for its flagship lineup.
