What is Apple’s AI model Apple Intelligence and what all can it do?

Highlights
  • Apple Intelligence is the brand’s in-house AI model which will run on upcoming Apple devices.
  • The brand has gone big on privacy with Private Cloud Compute and promises to opt for industry-best standards for its servers.
  • Apple Intelligence powers up a new contextually aware Siri which can carry out your tasks for you on-device.

Apple is touting its take on AI as “Apple Intelligence.” The brand plans to differentiate from currently available solutions by utilising the knowledge and data Apple devices have on you to improve your efficiency. With this data, devices powered with Apple Intelligence will give you personalised results for your queries. Apple Intelligence will be released in English language this Fall.

Here are some standout features of Apple Intelligence that you need to know about.

Siri is now a “device assistant”

In a conversation post-WWDC 2024, Apple executive John Giannandrea pointed out that Apple considers Apple Intelligence-fused Siri as a device assistant and not just a mere voice assistant anymore.

To complement this, Siri has a new look when it’s invoked, which goes around the edge of the device to signify that it can take action system-wide on your iPhone. Siri learns about you with your data on an iPhone and ensures that it’s contextually aware of tasks which can go like “Search emails from my Mom from a month back when she sent me her important documents.”

It can also act like an iPhone user Guide where you can find features you are looking for and carry out basic tasks like saving contacts from a Messages screen with a single voice command. You can also easily type to Siri if you’re in an environment where you’d not want to talk to it.

System-wide image generation capabilities

Apple Intelligence is using generative AI for images in system functionalities for exciting additions. Image Playground can be used to create “fun images in seconds”, and users can choose from three styles: Animation, Illustration and Sketch. These images are generated on-device, ensuring greater privacy while also improving the speed of generation.

Further, Genmojis is a new feature where users can create their own emojis with a text command that they like. You can even create a Genmoji based on your own or a friend’s face. These Genmojis can be sent as a sticker or as a Tapback in iMessage.

ChatGPT integration

Apple Intelligence can make use of compact on-device models for most of its tasks, but the brand also gives users an option to turn on ChatGPT as a plugin for tasks where they need a wider knowledge and dataset than OpenAI possesses.

ChatGPT has been integrated within text editing and image generation to ensure users have access to it as per their requirements. You can even connect your ChatGPT+ account to access paid features and Apple claims that these requests won’t be stored by OpenAI. In fact, the IP address of devices using ChatGPT through Apple Intelligence will be obscured.

Only available for select models

Considering that most of Apple Intelligence features run on-device, Apple is limiting its capability to some newer models of iPhones, iPads, and Macs. This is the list of devices that will be able to access Apple Intelligence features.

  • iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iPad Air with M1 chip and above
  • iPad Pro with M1 chip and above
  • Macs with M1 chip and above

How does Apple ensure security and privacy with Apple Intelligence?

While Apple is insistent about processing most of Apple Intelligence on-device, there are still some tasks which would need the help of data models which can only be stored on the cloud. Hence, the Californian brand is setting up its servers powered by its processors while ensuring that no personal data is retained or exposed.

Apple also claims that your device will not connect to a server unless it can establish that it has “publicly logged for inspection.” It’s enabling independent researchers to inspect the code that powers these servers to double down on their privacy claims.
