iOS 18 to be “the biggest upgrade” yet for iPhones, Apple to overhaul inbuilt apps: report
Apple has announced its annual Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) 2024 from June 10th to June 14th. At this event, we are expecting new software for all of its key hardware. The central attraction would be on iOS 18 which is reportedly getting a major “overhaul”. But, iPad users will also have a little nice treat awaiting them at the new iPadOS 18 announcement. Yes, a calculator app! Here are the details:
Revamped native apps on iOS 18 (rumour)
As per prolific Apple leakster Mark Gurman, iOS 18 could be “the biggest upgrade” in the iPhone operating sytem’s history. As part of this, Apple could revamp its built-in apps like Notes, Mail, Fitness, and Photo with iOS 18. He hasn’t however specified what these changes could be.
So, let’s rely on previous rumours. We think the Notes app will support an option to record voice memos and connect with calculator app to add math equations.
Speaking of which, another app that could get a big refresh is the Calculator app. It is rumoured to get:
- unit-convertor including up-to-date currency rate conversation
- a history sidebar showing earlier calculations
- a dedicated button to access this sidebar
- a toggle to switch between Basic, scientific, and programmer
- option to resize the calculator window as well as its various views
Gurman also corroborates the rumour that iPadOS 18 could ship with a calculator app. This would be the first time an iPad has a native calculator app.
Moving on, the Apple Maps could bring 2 new features namely:
- Custom routes which lets users choose a route they want to travel.
- Topographic maps which shows you contour lines, elevation, trails, and points of interest on a route you are hiking or travelling.
Messages app is said to feature RCS support and that could mean cross-platform messaging with Android with multimedia sharing benefits.
Apple is also highly anticipated to make a big push towards AI at this WWDC. It could add generative AI capabilities to Siri, Safari, and other native apps.
