OnePlus 12R vs OnePlus 12: design

In terms of design, the OnePlus 12R and OnePlus 12 do not diverge too much; the design is quite similar, from the positioning of the new alert slider on the left spine of the smartphones to the volume buttons resting above the power button on the right spine. The OnePlus 12R comes in two colours, Cool Blue and Iron Grey. The camera module comes with ridges, oozing off a watch-like appearance, and is also shaded blue to seamlessly blend into the overall design. The curved edges make for a comfortable holding experience. The Cool Blue variant, however, does pick up fingerprints rather easily and slides off of surfaces. The device is IP64-rated for water and dust resistance.

The OnePlus 12 comes in two colour options, the Flowy Emerald and Silky Black. The Flowy Emerald is quite striking, with its etched green marbling in the glass back and giving the smartphone a beautiful appearance. The black colour variant is for users who prefer a more subtle charm with a minimalist all-black panel. The camera module features Hasselblad branding, and the metal frame is also tinted green and blends into the overall colour palette of the smartphone. Unlike the 12R, the camera module does not present any ridges. The device is rated IP65, which is dust-resistant but isn’t quite water-resistant. The Gorilla Glass 5 protects the rear glass panel from damage.

OnePlus 12R vs OnePlus 12: display

The display panel on the OnePlus 12R is a 6.78-inch curved AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. It’s an LTPO 4.0 panel with 2,780 x 1,264 (FHD+) resolution and a peak brightness of 4,500 nits. The display is the brightest display on a smartphone, along with the OnePlus 12. The device comes with Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support for an immersive viewing experience and can stream in HD on OTT platforms. The phone uses the CPU to detect if the display is wet and adjust accordingly to maintain the touch experience. The Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protects the curved display against damage.

The OnePlus 12, on the other hand, equips a 6.82-inch curved AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The flagship also has an LTPO panel with a resolution of 3,168 x 1,440 pixels (QHD+) and 4,500nits peak brightness, and it also comes with Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support. The display uses a Display P1 chip, which claims to deliver the brightest and purest images with lower power consumption. The flagship also features Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection and comes with HyperTouch technology, designed to prevent mis-touches and improve touch accuracy.

Upgrades: The OnePlus 12 equips a larger and higher-resolution display compared to the OnePlus 12R and thus offers a better visual experience. The display panel on the 12R, however, is impressive in its own right, with its peak brightness levels and crisp AMOLED panel.

OnePlus 12R vs OnePlus 12: cameras

The one segment where both smartphones showcase a lot of difference is the camera setup. The OnePlus 12R comes with a 50MP Sony IMX890 primary camera, paired with an 8MP ultra-wide lens and a 2MP macro camera. At the front, the device comes with a 16 MP selfie camera.

The OnePlus 12 features an upgraded camera system, with a 50MP Sony LYT-808 primary camera with OIS, a 64MP OmniVision 64B periscope lens with 3x telephoto zoom and 6x in-sensor zoom, and a 48MP ultra-wide camera. There is a 32MP selfie camera at the front.

Upgrades: The OnePlus 12 offers a more capable rear camera setup in comparison to the OnePlus 12R. You can check out a more detailed camera analysis of the OnePlus 12 in our review of the device.

OnePlus 12R vs OnePlus 12: performance and software

Since the OnePlus 12 is the brand’s flagship offering, it uses the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage. On the other hand, the OnePlus 12R equips the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC from last year, paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 offers better performance output and more power efficiency compared to its predecessor. What’s interesting is that both smartphones come with a new Trinity Engine, which improves the performance output of the smartphones even further.

The engine uses six technologies to do so, namely CPU Vitalization, RAM Vitalization, ROM Vitalization, HyperBoost, HyperRendering, and HyperTouch. In simple terms, it allows smartphones to maintain top-notch performance with low battery drain, allow apps to keep running longer in the background, improve the phone lifecycle, and provide various boosts to gaming performance such as more frames, less lag, and fewer mis-touches. Both smartphones operate on OxygenOS 14.0, based on Android 14 out of the box.

Upgrades: With the presence of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, the OnePlus 12 offers a better performance output compared to the OnePlus 12R. Nevertheless, the 12R offers a compelling performance output for its price.

OnePlus 12R vs OnePlus 12: battery and charging

The OnePlus 12R equips a 5,500mAh battery, the largest ever in a OnePlus smartphone, and comes with 100W SUPERVOOC charging support. In comparison, a 5,400mAh battery powers the OnePlus 12, and it comes with 100W SUPERVOOC wired charging and 50W AIRVOOC fast charging support. The OnePlus 12 provides an impressive battery backup, and the OnePlus 12R has a higher-rated battery and should offer an equally impressive output. As per our review, the OnePlus 12 attained a 100 percent charge in around 35 minutes, and the OnePlus 12R is expected to offer a similar timeframe to go from 0 to 100 percent.

Upgrades: The OnePlus 12, in addition to the 100W fast charging, also offers 50W wireless charging, which is missing in the OnePlus 12R. The OnePlus 12R does come with a higher-rated battery and an equally impressive 100W charging speed, which more than makes up for the lack of wireless charging.
