TRAI warns Indians against scam calls threatening number disconnection

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has warned Indian citizens against fraudulent calls from malicious parties who claim to be from the body and threaten to disconnect numbers. The regulatory body has termed such calls as ‘illegal’. TRAI said that it never blocks or disconnects any mobile number of any user and clarified that any such calls or messages claiming to be from TRAI should be treated as fraudulent.

TRAI cautions people

  • Scamsters indulging in such activities also tend mislead innocent citizens by claiming that their Aadhaar numbers have been used to get new SIM cards and are being used for illegal activities.
  • They are also tricking users/the public into coming on Skype video calls to avoid any disconnection of mobile numbers.
  • TRAI has clarified that it has not assigned or authorised any agency to contact customers regarding any disconnections. 
  • The regulatory body has said that these activities are illegal and will be dealt with as per law.

It has been brought to the notice of TRAI that some companies/ agencies/ individuals are fraudulently asking the public/ customers that they are calling from TRAI and mobile numbers of the public/ customers will be disconnected as the numbers are being used for sending unsolicited messages. The public at large is hereby informed that TRAI does not block/ disconnect any mobile number of any individual telecom customers. TRAI never sends any message or makes any call for disconnection of mobile numbers,” said TRAI in a statement.

As per Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulation (TCCCPR) 2018 of TRAI, Access Service Providers are responsible for taking any appropriate actions against the mobile numbers which are involved in sending unsolicited communications.

Here’s what you can do if you get such a call

Affected users may take up the matter with the service providers concerned through their respective customer service centre numbers or on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal cybercrime.gov.in or call Cyber Crime Helpline Number 1930, as per TRAI.
