Top tech news this week: iQOO 12 series launched, Omegle shutdown, OnePlus 12 camera details and more

This week in tech we saw iQOO’s flagship smartphones launch with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. One of the most popular video chat sites, Omegle announced it’s shutting down. MediaTek also launched its flagship chipset, the Dimensity 9300. OnePlus confirmed some key camera details for its upcoming phone, the OnePlus 12. And Redmi launched a budget phone.

iQOO 12, iQOO 12 Pro launched

iQOO 12 series launched earlier this week. It features the iQOO 12 and iQOO 12 Pro. Both phones are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, and offer up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of onboard storage. The new iQOO phones also feature a 6.78-inch OLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate, 50MP + 50MP + 64MP rear cameras. iQOO 12 is also confirmed to launch in India on December 12th.

Omegle shuts down

The popular video chat site, Omegle, has shut down after 14 years. The website creator left a long letter detailing what led him to the decision. According to the creator, Omegle faced several attacks, which he tried to stop as much as possible. But the attacks soon took a toll on him financially and psychologically as well. Omegle launched back in 2009, and it became popular during the Covid-19 lockdown. 

OnePlus 12 camera details confirmed

OnePlus 12 is confirmed to feature a new Sony LYT-808 sensor that has been co-developed with Sony. The Sony LYT-808 will most likely be a 50MP 1/1.4″ primary camera. The smartphone is also rumoured to feature Hasselblad optics and, leverage OPPO’s HDR and portrait-related technology for processing images. A 64MP 1/2.0″ periscope-telephoto lens is also tipped for the OnePlus 12.

MediaTek Dimensity 9300 SoC

MediaTek Dimensity 9300 SoC launched

MediaTek’s flagship chipset, the Dimensity 9300 launched this week. It is equipped with high-performance CPU cores and a 12-core Immortalis-G720 MC12 GPU. MediaTek says the Dimensity 9300 SoC offers a “40 percent multi-core performance upgrade” and “46 percent improvement in hardware raytracing performance.” The Vivo X100 is confirmed to launch with this chipset. 

Redmi 13C launched

Redmi 13C was launched in Nigeria as the brand’s latest budget offering. It is priced around Rs 10,200 when converted, and the phone is expected to launch in India as well. Redmi 13C comes with an HD+ display, the MediaTek Helio G85 processor, triple rear cameras, a 5,000mAh battery, and runs Android 13-based MIUI 13.
