5 open-world games you can play until GTA 6 releases
After many years, Rockstar has finally announced that the first trailer for GTA 6 will drop in early December and coincide with the publisher’s 25th anniversary. However, we can expect the game to launch in 2024, or even 2025. With that in mind, if you’ve got a GTA-sized itch to scratch, then you’ve come to the right place. In this piece, we will be looking at five open-world games that will tide you over till the launch of GTA 6.
Before we get to that, do note that there’s no dearth of open-word games in the current landscape. Pretty much all genres offer an open-world game now. Several racing games, action-adventure games, and more have explorable maps for players. For this list, we are trying to stick with games that follow the essence of a Grand Theft Auto title. This means a vast open world, multiple modes of transportation that players can acquire, and a story that has something to do with crime. So, let’s get to it.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Well, who would know how to make a great GTA-like game than Rockstar themselves? Red Dead Redemption 2 is a masterpiece in gaming and is considered one of the best games ever made. Set in the American frontier, you take on the role of an outlaw who has to do what he can to protect his gang. The story is deep, the graphics are insane and the gameplay is one of the best out there.
Pros | Cons |
Great gameplay | That one heartbreaking moment… |
Excellent graphics | |
Wonderful story |
Cyberpunk 2077
While the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 was anything but smooth, CD Projekt Red has done a fine job in trying to make the game better. In fact, the 2.0 update has completely overhauled much of the game’s mechanics. So you can now enjoy the neon-drenched streets of Night City the way they were meant to be enjoyed. In fact, the developers have even released a new DLC for the game called Phantom Liberty.
Pros | Cons |
Good graphics | Still a little rough around the edges |
Good story |
Saints Row 3 Remastered
The Saints Row series was one of the first of the so-called ‘GTA-clones’ that came out soon after the launch of GTA III. However, it soon carved its own niche among gamers thanks to its whacky, over-the-top action. The craziest of the lot was Saints Row 3, and the Remastered version gives players the chance to experience the game with better graphics.
Pros | Cons |
Absolutely crazy gameplay | Glitchy |
Awesome story |
Watch Dogs 2
The first Watch Dogs game underwhelmed gamers. It took itself way too seriously. Watch Dogs 2 was a more light-hearted take and the series fared better because of it. It offered a more likeable cast of characters mixed with fun-filled gameplay. The game was set in a beautiful rendition of San Francisco.
Pros | Cons |
Likeable characters | Inconsistent AI |
Good map | |
Fun missions |
Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition
Set in a recreated version of Hong Kong, Sleeping Dogs feels more like a John Woo action movie. It also offers a greater emphasis on melee combat rather than gunplay, which makes sense as firearms would be harder to come by. Of course, this is the Definitive Edition, so you get better graphics and all of the downloadable content.
Pros | Cons |
Excellent melee combat | Graphics could be better |
Unique setting |
