Top tech news this week: OnePlus Open India launch, Xiaomi HyperOS and more
This week in tech, we witnessed the launch of a new foldable smartphone, the OnePlus Open. It’s also the first foldable from OnePlus. WhatsApp announced a highly-requested feature, while Xiaomi announced its new operating system. X is also revoking basic features such as posting content, liking posts for new users. The new Apple Pencil with USB-C is also here in India.

OnePlus Open India launch
OnePlus finally debuted its first foldable phone, the Open. It’s priced at Rs 1,39,999 for the single 16GB + 512GB variant in India. OnePlus Open has a 7.82-inch 2K AMOLED main display, and a 6.31-inch 2K AMOLED outer display. The foldable is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, and it packs a 4,805mAh battery with 67W SUPERVOOC Charging.
Multiple WhatsApp accounts
WhatsApp now let you use two WhatsApp accounts at the same time on the same smartphone. You will need a second phone number for this feature to work. Once you’ve added the other WhatsApp account, you’ll be able to manage privacy and notification settings for each account individually. This way if you want WhatsApp working on both your numbers, it’s finally possible to do so.
Xiaomi HyperOS
Xiaomi has launched a new operating system ‘HyperOS’, and it will debut with the upcoming Xiaomi 14 series. HyperOS will “gradually succeed MIUI,” according to Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun. There aren’t much details yet but HyperOS is expected to be the default operating system on all Xiaomi phones and tablets. For now, we’ll have to wait for more details, and the Xiaomi 14 launch to know how the new OS looks.
X subscription fee for new users
X has started testing a new subscription plan that new users will have to pay for if they want basic features such as posting content, and liking posts. It’s currently being tested in New Zealand and the Philippines for an annual fee of $1. X plans on seeing how it works, and eventually expand it to other markets. This subscription fee is only for new users though, as existing users won’t see any change.
New Apple Pencil with USB-C
Apple has launched a new Apple Pencil with USB-C port in India. It’s priced at Rs 7,900, and will be available starting early November. The new Apple Pencil works with all iPad models with a USB-C port. The list includes the iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th generation), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation), iPad Air (4th and 5th generation), iPad 10th generation, and iPad mini 6th generation.
