iPhone 15 series to get a charging feature that protects battery health: report

Highlights
  • Apple has a new iOS feature to help you save your iPhone battery health.
  • It is likely a feature in the iPhone 15 and later iPhones.
  • This is different from the Optimized Battery Charging feature on iOS.

iPhone 15 series will be available from September 22nd and their pre-order begins this Friday, i.e., September 15th. It will be booting with iOS 17 and one of the new iOS features for iPhone 15 is going to be a charging limiting option that should help in the longevity of the iPhone’s battery health. Here we will see how this iPhone 15 charging feature would work.

iPhone 15 charge feature: what we know

The new iPhone 15 charging feature was spotted in the iOS 17 RC code by tinkerers at 9to5Mac. It is still not user-accessible on iPhone 14 and older iPhones with this new iOS update. We are not sure if it will be reserved for USB-C iPhones and whether it will be available on the iPhone 15 series at launch.

However, once the iOS 17 stable version rolls out this Monday, i.e., September 18th, the feature is likely to be present within the Battery settings menu.

Here’s how it is expected to work:

  • The iPhone user would be able to set the maximum limit till which their iPhone should be charged. Say you set that limit to X in Settings > Battery and the next time you plug in the charger, it “will only charge to about X%.” You will get a notification on the lockscreen telling you the same.
  • However, if you haven’t enabled this feature, the iPhone “will charge to its full capacity.”

You should also be able to find the last time your iPhone charged to the preset limit. This may be present in the Battery settings menu only.

Well, Apple is not the first one to introduce such a feature. Its rival in the Android world, Samsung also has a similar battery protection function that lets the Galaxy phone users limit the charging capped at 85 per cent. It is called the Protect Battery option.

Why maximum battery charge limiter?

As the name of the feature on both iOS 17 and Samsung One UI suggests, this is meant to extend the lifespan of the phone battery.

Frequently charging a Lithium-ion battery full is said to deteriorate the battery’s health.

iOS has a feature called Maximum Capacity within Settings > Battery > Battery Health and Charging that shows a relative measure of the battery capacity compared to when it was new. The lower this figure is, the fewer will be the hours that the iPhone battery lasts.

The new charging limiter could help you retain a high Maximum Capacity for the iPhone battery health.

Within the Battery Settings menu, you will see another iOS battery health feature called Optimized Battery Charging which is also aimed at preserving the device’s battery health. However, it is different from the titular feature. It learns when to charge your iPhone beyond 80 per cent based on your charging habits.

If all of these features work as intended, iPhone 15 and later users may not have to be worried about replacing the battery.
