Here’s what Nothing CEO Carl Pei thinks about the new iPhone 15 series
Founder and CEO of Nothing, Carl Pei shared his thoughts on the newly launched iPhone 15 series, which included four models and new wearables. Like everyone, Carl also acknowledges the biggest change this year i.e. the USB Type-C port from the Lightning. He says this shift is a win for the ecosystem.
Carl Pei’s impressions on the iPhone 15 series
- Firstly, Carl Pei says that events were better when they were held before a live audience as there is excitement about the occasion.
- Apple replaced its Lightning port with a USB-C port on the new iPhones after the EU passed a law requiring that all electronic devices must use USB-C for charging in its 27 countries.
- Pei says that Apple was waiting to change to USB-C because its proprietary Lightning port is used as a way to make it a little harder for iPhone users to switch to Android.
- Pei says that the titanium build of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models will offer benefits like weight and durability.
- However, Carl Pei opines that tech fans would be excited by the use of titanium while the average consumer would be unable to tell the difference between titanium, steel or aluminium.
- The Nothing CEO says that he respects Apple for constantly refining all aspects of the iPhone, although slowly.
- The much-talked ‘Action button’ that replaced the ‘mute switch’ isn’t that exciting for Carl Pei.
- Pei rightfully points out the action button is not new but he says that Apple probably has data showing that the mute switch is not being used often.
- The Nothing top executive says that the action button will eventually be used as a shortcut for an AI-powered Super Siri.
- Carl Pei talks about the new iPhone cameras as well. He opines that the brand is putting resources into improving photography on the device.
Talking about the Apple Watch Ultra 2, Carl Pei says that a lot of friends purchased the wearable but he is not sure how popular it is. He believes that people buy the Watch Ultra 2 just because it is the most expensive model and has become a status symbol. Carl Pei clarifies that he is not a smartwatch fan and shows his bare wrist in the video. However, CMF by Nothing is gearing up to introduce a new smartwatch soon.
He also shared thoughts on Vision Pro and believes that this will not shift users from smartphones to wearing a headset all day long.
Lastly, Carl Pei also points out that besides the USB-C port, there are other ways in which Apple is being anti-competitive. He says that there are several features that work only on iPhones such as AirDrop. Pei clarifies that this is not secret as emails made public during various lawsuits show Apple executives discussing ways to lock iPhone users into the ecosystem. “As the most valuable tech company in the world, you should be able to compete on other things,” said Carl.
