Forget about 200MP! Samsung is apparently working on a massive 440MP camera sensor

Highlights
  • The company is reportedly developing four new camera sensors.
  • There is currently no official word about the new camera sensors.
  • A tipster said the 320MP sensor was apparently planned for the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

After unveiling their first 200MP camera smartphone in the form of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra which launched earlier this year, South Korean tech giant Samsung is likely developing four new sensors. This lineup also includes a massive 440MP camera, claims a tipster, but it’s unclear if that sensor is indeed meant for smartphones.

Samsung tipped to be working on new camera sensors

On X (formerly Twitter), tipster Revegnus said that the South Korean tech giant is likely working on four different camera sensors – a 50MP ISOCELL GN6 sensor with 1.6-micron pixels, a 200MP HP7 sensor with 0.7-micron pixels, an unnamed 320MP sensor, and a 440MP HU1 sensor

  • 440MP HU1 sensor: The tipster didn’t specify the sensor’s specs and only mentioned that the company is developing it. It is not known if the sensor will be used in smartphones or not, and there are chances that it might be intended for other areas like automotive or industrial usecases. However, interestingly, Samsung had claimed back in 2020 that it was aiming at developing a camera with a resolution equivalent to the human eye, i.e 500MP to 600MP. The 440MP sensor seems a likely possibility taking this into consideration.
  • 320MP sensor: Without revealing many details, the tipster mentioned that the unnamed 320MP sensor might be seen in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra. Notably, the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 processor supports cameras with up to 320MP resolution, so this could be a very likely scenario.
  • 200MP HP7 sensor: According to the tip, the 200MP HP7 sensor with 0.7-micron pixels was initially planned for the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. However, it was dropped because its production cost was too high. Looks like this camera sensor is quite similar to the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 200MP HP2 camera, but with larger pixels.
  • 50MP ISOCELL GN6 sensor: The tipster noted that this sensor wouldn’t be used in Samsung phones, but it’s probable that Chinese manufacturers might adopt it. According to reports, this might be Samsung’s first 1-inch camera, competing with Sony’s 1-inch IMX989 sensor, which Vivo has used for its flagship Vivo X90 Pro+.

In other news, the company is currently working on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. It is rumoured to include a 200MP primary sensor, a 12MP ultrawide sensor, a 50MP telephoto lens, and a 10MP periscope lens. Additionally, there’s expected to be a 12MP sensor on the front. However, these details are based on speculations, and the exact specifications will be known when the phone goes official.
