Ola S1, S1 Pro electric scooters’ prices increased by Rs 15,000 as subsidies reduce

Highlights
  • Ola Electric has announced a price hike of Rs 15,000 on its Ola S1 and Ola S1 Pro electric scooters
  • The Ola S1 and Ola S1 Pro are now priced at Rs Rs 1.3 lakh and Rs 1.4 lakh (ex-showroom) respectively
  • Ola S1 with the 2kWh battery pack has now been delisted from the company website

Ola Electric has hiked the prices of the Ola S1 Pro and Ola S1 premium electric scooters. The move comes right after the Government of India made its FAME II subsidy norms more stringent and reduced the subsidy amount to Rs 10,000 per kWh. The company seems to also redone its portfolio and dropped a variant from the Ola S1 line.

The Ola S1 is now priced at Rs 1.3 lakh (ex-showroom) and the Ola S1 Pro is priced at Rs 1.4 lakh (ex-showroom) both of which have received a price hike of Rs 15,000. It is expected that other popular EV OEMs like Ather Energy, Bajaj Auto, TVS and Hero MotoCorp will also increase prices on their products soon.

Why have Ola S1, S1 Pro prices been hiked?

While the prices on the Ola S1 (3kWh) and the Ola S1 Pro (4kWh) have gone up, the Ola S1 with the 2kWh battery pack which was introduced recently at a price of Rs 99,999 (ex-showroom) has now been delisted from the website. It is unknown whether Ola Electric has discontinued the variant altogether. The prices of entry-level Ola S1 Air affordable electric scooters currently remain unchanged.

The price changes come courtesy of the stricter norms for the FAME II subsidy as well as the reduction of the subsidy rates from Rs 15,000/kWh to Rs 10,000/kWh. The total capping on the subsidy has also been reduced from 40 percent to 15 percent of the total value of the EV. Previously, Ola Electric had suggested that the prices of Ola electric scooters will remain unaffected to an extent as the company has invested in the government’s PLI scheme and is aiming to maximise its in-house production.

Following Ola Electric, other OEMs such as Ather Energy, Bajaj Auto, TVS and Hero MotoCorp are also expected to hike prices on their electric two-wheelers.
