Future Ola Electric scooters could come with helmet detection system

Ola Electric is working on a new camera-based helmet detection system for its electric scooters. This new technology could be deployed in upcoming Ola Electric products and could boost safety amongst riders in India. The technology is said to be capable of directly interacting with the vehicle’s brain and shifting to park mode if the rider is not wearing a helmet. 

The new helmet detection system will use a camera to improve rider’s safety

The camera-based helmet detection system will use advanced processing capabilities to detect if the rider is wearing a helmet or not, according to a report by Autocar India. This information will then be transferred to the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) or what can be thought to be the brain of the EV. This VCU, which has access to the ride control of the EV will shift the vehicle to Park thereby not allowing the scooter to move. This is to aid the safety of the rider.

The report also suggest that Ola’s system will not let the EV move to Ride mode until the helmet detection system identifies a helmet being worn by the rider. TVS is also working on a similar helmet detection system which the company had announced earlier. However, the TVS system will act as a reminder and will not actively interfere with the ride of the two-wheeler.

Ola Electric will be conducting its #endIceAge Part 1 event in July where CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has promised new technologies and possibly a new electric scooter. It is unknown if the company will showcase this new helmet-detection technology at the event.
