PS5 sales cross 38 million, no stock issues in India right now

Highlights
  • PlayStation 5 sales have been at an all-time high.
  • Sony sold 19.1 million PlayStation units in this last financial year.
  • This number brings the overall sales number to a whopping 38.4 million.

After dealing with component shortages which led to production logjams and Sony re-evaluating its sales forecasts for the year 2020-21, the PS5 is going through a purple patch. PlayStation 5 sales have been at an all-time high, as the console had its best year yet.

Sony recently released their earnings report for the final quarter of the year 2021-22, and it is these reports that provide us with the latest sales numbers. Sony sold 19.1 million PlayStation units in this last financial year, which is a significant jump from 11.5 million last year. This number brings the overall sales number to a whopping 38.4 million.

Bloomberg notes that both revenue from game software and PlayStation Network monthly active users were up in the last year too. Sony seems to be shrugging the supply chain issues that the PlayStation has faced in the past, projecting a further increase in sales, with an aim to sell 25 million units in 2023-24. If they make this number, it would be a record. Overall, Sony’s gaming division raked in 3.64 trillion yen in the current fiscal year, up 33% from last year.

This surge in sales this year has been attributed to the fact that you can actually get a PS5 in stores now. In previous years, sales were impacted by supply chain issues and component deficiencies.

In late March, Sony announced a Rs 5,000 price cut on all PS5 variants in India. This brought the starting price of the PS5 to Rs 39,990 for the Digital Edition. This offer, however, is no longer available as the console’s starting price is back to Rs 44,990 on e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart. That said, the console is now available for purchase readily, suggesting an end to the stock issues that plagued the console.
