Honda electric two-wheeler plans in India
Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India have developed a definitive plan to enter the growing India electric two-wheeler segment in India after having exhaustively studied the market for over two years. According to Autocar India, Honda is interested to launch electric two-wheelers in different body styles, performance levels and powertrain options. Zero-emission products will revolve around both swappable and fixed battery technologies. Currently, Honda is working on two projects codenamed GJNA and K4BA which include the upcoming Honda Activa Electric as well as a moped with a swappable battery.
Both the above models are expected to hit Indian roads in 2024 and will have the potential for 5 lakh unit sales in just 3 years. The company expects the number to reach 10 lakh units by 2026-27 with more products in the pipeline. Honda is also eager to establish its swappable battery technology and has already established a base in Bengaluru for Honda Power Pack Energy India Private Limited (HEID). This front currently caters to the three-wheeler segment after being established in 2021. However, the Japanese automaker is planning to incorporate its strengths into the upcoming foray into the Indian EV two-wheeler market. HEID currently operates 70 battery swapping stations in Bengaluru and has plans to expand to other cities in the future.
Honda Motorcycle & Scooters India’s president Atsushi Ogata, who is being cited as the mastermind strategist to have chalked out this action plan, has spent about three years defining the company’s future course of action. Ogata believes that EV penetration will increase to 15 to 20 percent by the end of the decade. The company also plans to cater to its international demand by facilitating exports from India.
