Xiaomi-Leica partnership to yield camera-oriented smartphones in the future

Smartphone makers Xiaomi India and German Leica Camera AG have established a long-term partnership that aims to optimise the optical performance of the former’s smartphone. The partnership has already yielded the Xiaomi 12S Ultra smartphone which was launched globally back in July 2022. The partnership has concluded an R&D framework for the development and engineering of cameras for smartphones and intends to deliver improved optical performance. The association between two major global brands aims to discover and implement new hardware and software technologies including AI and computational photography.

Xiaomi has been one of the pioneers in the smartphone industry and has been developing customer-oriented products. The smartphone maker claims to have strived for innovations in the field of AI, ultra-fast charging, bezel-less displays, motorised cameras, etc. The company has also shown great dedication to improving its optical performance and has over the years accumulated technical know-how in the field of lenses, chips for cameras, etc. 

Xiaomi India and Leica Camera AG share the same ideas regarding mobile imaging. Both companies are eager to continuously explore the optical performance and photographic experience in the mobile imaging era through extreme technological breakthroughs and aesthetic pursuits

Leica Camera AG’s prowess in the optics industry can now be observed to contribute to Xiaomi’s camera systems. The partnership aims to bring along Leica’s 100-plus years of photography heritage in optical engineering and craftsmanship. Leica will also contribute to tuning the image processing to achieve “the Leica image look”. The photography optimisations will contribute to optical engineering, design, and imaging software to offer the best possible imaging results in the field of smartphone photography.
