Maruti Suzuki’s first EV for India, as big as a Creta, with 500km range coming to Auto Expo 2023
Maruti Suzuki India will show its very first EV for India at the Auto Expo 2023. The upcoming EV from Maruti will take the form of an SUV with dimensions close to a Hyundai Creta. The new EV is also expected to set some benchmark standards of range, close to the 500km mark. Maruti’s EV product comes much after other large Indian automakers such as Tata Motors and Mahindra already launched strong EV products in the country to grab a chunk of the market.
Maruti EV at Auto Expo 2023
As per Autocar India, the new compact SUV will be as big as the Hyundai Creta and will offer a range of close to 500km on a single charge. The model will preview the company’s all-new electric skateboard architecture and will be co-developed with Toyota. Toyota will also later spawn a similar product under its banner.
The new EV has been codenamed YY8 and the SUV will be based on the 27PL platform which is a derivative of Toyota’s 40PL global platform. The platform allows for a long wheelbase to accommodate a large battery back and a spacious cabin. The design of the car will contribute largely to maximising space in the cabin. One such design feature could be the pushed-out axles that will relocate the wheels to the corners of the chassis. This would result in shorter overhangs and open up the majority of the space in the cabin.
Maruti EV price in India
Maruti will be aiming for a sticker price range between Rs 13 to Rs 15 lakh which will position it as a value-for-money offering in the segment. If and when launched, the YY8 SUV could be expected to be an MG ZS EV-sized vehicle with a similar range but at the price of a comparable Tata Nexon EV Prime. The vehicle is expected to debut in January-February 2025.
