5 challenges Samsung wants to overcome with its upcoming foldable phones

Highlights
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 comes with S Pen support but there is no dedicated slot to place it.
  • Samsung’s upcoming foldable phones might have a designated S Pen slot.
  • The company aims to offer better durability, improved cameras, and more with its foldable smartphones.

The foldable smartphone segment currently has a limited market share across the globe, thanks to the premium price and lack of multiple options at different price points. However, this adds to making the user experience more unique. More importantly, the folding form factor can be considered a vast improvement and a breath of fresh air by many users over the typical candy bar rectangular designs. Samsung is undoubtedly the market leader among the very few brands that offer foldables.

The South Korean giant with each iteration is making progress to achieve that one perfect foldable with no shortcomings. The recently launched Galaxy Z Fold4 adds S Pen support but doesn’t have a dedicated slot like the Galaxy S22 Ultra. In a meeting with suppliers, Samsung confirmed (via) addressing this and a few other challenges it wants to overcome with the upcoming foldable phones. Here are five challenges that Samsung wants to overcome with its upcoming foldables.

How to make the foldables better?

Making the foldable weigh less and thinner: With its upcoming foldable phones, Samsung wants to make them weigh less and make them thinner compared to the current generation. To recall, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 weighs 254 grams, which is heavier than the current regular phones. We can probably expect the upcoming foldable to weigh less and have a thinner form factor.

More durable: No foldable is as durable as the regular phone but Samsung foldables have a slightly better build. With the upcoming models, the company aims to make them even stronger. Will this increase the price tag of the phone? Well, only time will tell.

Reduce the crease on the screen: With the upcoming foldables, Samsung also wants to reduce the crease on the screen. For those unaware, the crease is where the display folds in the middle. While this in no way hampers the user experience, it comes in the way while interacting with the screen. This is common on every foldable phone out there. The South Korean brand also wants software development that fits the 4:3 screen ratio.

Having a designated S Pen slot: As said, despite the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 having S Pen support, there is no designated slot for the same. With the upcoming foldables, Samsung aims to provide a slot within the phone. This should make the Samsung foldable even more popular among buyers, especially those who are into S Pen.

The company initially planned for the S Pen slot on the Galaxy Z Fold4, and also wanted flagship-grade cameras. It couldn’t manage to do either due to weight and thickness limitations.

Cameras: Optics on Samsung foldables are not among the top talking points. While they are good and do the job, they are not the best when compared to regular phones. With the upcoming foldable phones, the brand wants that to change.
