1. Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos are back and better than ever

In a recent video highlighting God of War Ragnarok’s combat, the dev team shows off Kratos eliminating various enemies with his signature weapons, Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos. However, these weapons are now improved to offer more combat options to players. As previously revealed by lead combat designers Denny Yeh and Mihir Sheth, Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos are now more powerful and provide increased maneuverability. Players will also get access to Weapon Signature moves after they hit the Triangle button. Kratos will infuse the steel with ice or fire based on whether you are using Leviathan Axe or Blades of Chaos, and perform Frost Awaken or Whiplash. These moves can deal additional damage by freezing or burning enemies.

2. Kratos gets an upgraded shield

God of War Ragnarok

God of War Ragnarok introduces a new mechanic for Kratos’ shield. In the previous title, the shield allowed you to block enemy attacks and parry them. In Ragnarok, you will be able to choose between one or the other. Small and light shields will be great for parrying and offer a bigger window for counterattacks, but they would block less damage. On the other hand, larger shields will block more damage, but parrying would be somewhat difficult. There will be even more variations to this mechanic in the game. This new God of War Ragnarok mechanic will make the combat even more versatile.

3. Atreus becomes more prominent in combat

In 2016’s God of War, Atreus assists Kratos in combat while taking down enemies and bosses. Atreus will be even better in combat in Ragnarok. He will be older in the new game and much more confident in his abilities. Atreus will most likely be able to chain attack combos and initiate combat with enemies even before Kratos does. His magical abilities will also have a higher range compared to arrows, which can help in distracting as well as attacking enemies. Atreus will be a much bigger part of the story in God of War Ragnarok and help out his father Kratos in various ways.

4. More diverse enemies to encounter

God of War Ragnarok features various types of enemies that will make combat even more engaging. Players will encounter more enemies than in the previous game and they will not be as forgiving. The enemies will hit much harder, forcing you to play it safe instead of mashing attacks. Besides these, God of War Ragnarok has different types of beasts with unique moves, strengths, and weaknesses. You will need to study their attack and defence patterns to figure out openings for specific moves. This will make the game’s combat feel more complex. Combat designer Stephen Oyarijivbie said, “Our design philosophy for creating new and memorable enemies is basically making them a combat puzzle, similar to like chess, and focusing on the chess pieces. Each piece has its own theme and its own use.”

5. Several hours of gameplay and exploration

Recent reports claim that God of War Ragnarok is 40 hours long. The main story of the game will run for 20 hours, with 16 and a half hours of gameplay and 3 and a half hours of cutscenes. Besides these, the game will feature 20 hours of side quests, with 19 hours of gameplay and 1 hour of cutscenes. This means there will be a lot of places to explore, characters to meet, and enemies to fight in God of War Ragnarok. The game is expected to have well-designed environments to showcase the Nine Realms of Norse Mythology alongside an action-packed story that will keep you hooked.
