Honda BENLY e electric scooter with swappable batteries spotted testing in Bengaluru
Honda BENLY e electric scooter has been spied testing without camouflage in Bengaluru. The B2B service scooter was earlier spied last year and was understood to be a test bed for Honda’s swappable battery technology. Honda, which has shown interest in the Indian EV space, could soon bring the BENLY e or some other electric scooter from its stable along with swappable battery technology.
This is not the first instance of Honda venturing into the Indian EV space, as earlier leaks and rumours have suggested that the company is readying an e-scooter which could be named the Honda Activa E. Recently, Honda was also spied on having applied for a patent for the Honda U-Go e-scooter in India.
Honda BENLY e spied testing, again
The Honda BENLY e electric scooter was spied sans camouflage testing in Bengaluru by Zigwheels. This is the second time the scooter was spotted testing in India. Earlier it was believed that Honda is using the BENLY e electric scooter as a test rig to conduct tests on its swappable battery technology.
The BENLY e scooter comes with twin battery packs, with each battery sized at 0.99kWh capacity. Both these batteries can be swapped, thereby allowing the rider to use the scooter again with a fully charged within a minute. Honda is probably testing this tech for India through the electric scooter.
The BENLY e scooter that was spotted on the test had a green and white registration number plate and has been registered to Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India as per Rushlane‘s investigation. The RTO to which the vehicle was registered is the Jayanagar RTO with code KA 05.
This could be strong enough reasoning as Honda will be deploying its MPP batteries for similar products aimed at the Indian market. The company has initiated a new branch called Honda Power Pack Energy India. This new vertical will be responsible for locally manufacturing swappable battery packs for two and three-wheelers from Honda in India.
The speculation surrounding the testing for Honda’s swappable battery also falls in place with Honda’s association with HPCL and Bengaluru Metro to establish swappable battery stations. The stations will cater to the two and three-wheeler market and the first one was expected to become active in May 2022. Honda has also conducted a pilot study program in 2021 in Thane, Maharastra. The study racked up 2,00,000km and 7,000 battery swaps.
