Indian industrialist Ratan Tata pleasantly surprised many admirers when he arrived at Mumbai’s Taj Hotel in an electric Tata Nano recently. In a video that has gone viral, Ratan Tata is seen getting out of the Tata Nano EV, which was being driven by his assistant Shantanu Naidu, and being escorted by the hotel guards. Netizens were quick to notice that he was not accompanied by bodyguards.
The Tata Nano EV was gifted to the 84-year-old former chairman of Tata Sons by ElectraEV. Ratan Tata also happens to be the founder of ElectraEV, which offers EV powertrain solutions to Tata Motors and various other automakers. The Tata Nano EV gifted to Mr Tata uses a special 72V electric drive architecture retrofitted to an ICE Tata Nano. Ratan Tata’s Tata Nano EV has a pearl white exterior paint shade and a red leather interior.

The Tata Nano started its life as a dream project for Ratan Tata who aimed to equip Indian middle-class families ,which still primarily used motorcycles for transport, with a car. According to Mr Tata, a low-cost car would not only fulfil the dreams of many families but also provide a safer and more comfortable form of transport for middle-class Indian families. Ratan Tata passionately pursued the project, which saw the light of the day on January 10th, 2008. The Tata Nano started at a base price of just Rs 1 lakh (ex-showroom). Recently, Mr Tata penned a note on Instagram about launching the Tata Nano, which vent viral.
The Tata Nano went on to serve many families since its launch and was even appreciated by many as a piece of frugal Indian engineering. ElectraEV, an EV startup founded by Ratan Tata, retrofitted ICE based Tata Nanos with a 48V EV powertrain and deployed it as an all-electric cab service called the SainikPod Sit & Go in the city of Bengaluru. In a symbolic gesture, ElectraEV gifted its founder the one-off Tata Nano EV back in February.
