AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution vs Nvidia DLSS: What you need to know
AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) and Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) are two popular technologies that are used for upscaling images in games. These technologies offer resolution boost, higher frame rates, and enhanced quality compared to native resolution in games. Nvidia created and launched DLSS with RTX 20-series GPUs, and AMD launched its own FSR solution in 2021. If you are wondering what is the difference between AMD FSR and Nvidia DLSS, then here’s what you need to know about both technologies, gaming performance, and supported titles.
What is AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution?
AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution is a post-processing algorithm that is designed to enhance and upscale frames in certain games. After upscaling an image with a spatial algorithm, FSR uses edge detection and sharpening filters to further improve the image. A major advantage with FSR is that it can run on any modern GPU since it is open-source. FSR’s algorithm uses shaders that come with come with all modern GPUs. AMD FSR has four modes with different scaling factors – 1.3x for Ultra quality, 1.5x for Quality, 1.7x for Balanced, and 2.0 for Performance. The scaling factors are applied in horizontal as well as vertical dimensions, which allows the Performance mode to achieve 4x upscaling.
What is Nvidia DLSS?
Nvidia had created Deep Learning Super Sampling to enhance performances in games without affecting the image quality. For this, Nvidia introduced tensor core hardware in RTX 20 series and 30 series GPUs. Tensor core-based hardware allows more effective training and interference processes in artificial intelligence related operations. The special hardware lets Nvidia RTX series GPUs to use a lot of computational power for upscaling and enhancing images with the help of inputs from previous frames, current frame at lower resolution, and an AI network trained to make lower resolution images look high-res. Just like AMD’s FSR, Nvidia DLSS comes with four modes – Quality, Balanced, Performance, and Ultra Performance. Unlike FSR, Nvidia’s DLSS is not open source and can be used on Nvidia GPUs only.
AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution vs Nvidia DLSS: Which one is better for gaming?
Picking a clear winner between AMD FSR or Nvidia DLSS can be quite tricky as there aren’t any major differences in the quality. Based on testing done by VentureBeat, if you use quality settings on any of the modern powerful GPUs, you will barely notice any difference between FSR and DLSS. However, you might get better frame rate in FSR. That being said, DLSS seems to be better in most settings when it comes to quality and frame rate. A major factor worth noting is that you would need an Nvidia GPU to use DLSS, while FSR has no such restriction. Both Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR deliver great results in every mode. Unless you spend time to compare them side-by-side in a rigorous test, you would barely notice much difference in everyday use.
