Apple iPhone 15 Pro rumoured to feature under-display selfie camera with Face ID
Apple’s 2022 iPhone is still months away from launch, but we have started getting the scoop about next year’s iPhone – the iPhone 15. The iPhone 14 series is expected to get rid of the notch with a new dual punch-hole design, but the camera could move under the display next year with the iPhone 15. According to a new report from South Korean publication TheElec, the iPhone 15 Pro could adopt an under-display solution for the front-facing camera array.
The report asserts that the next year’s iPhone 15 Pro model will use the next-gen under-display camera developed by Samsung Display and OTI Lumionics. The said under-display camera is expected to first debut on the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold5, and it will be later seen on the iPhone 15 Pro and possibly Pro Max as well.
Samsung is reported to be developing a new generation of organic cathode patterning material (CPM) in collaboration with OTI Lumionics. The new material enables “microscopic transparent windows to be opened in the cathode and OLED pixel layers,” which would make the display completely transparent, letting Apple equip the selfie camera and Face ID sensors under the display. This, in turn, would result in a notch or hole-punch free screen estate.
There is no word if the standards model will come with the same under-display camera or have the notch or get the dual punch-hole design. The non-Pro models will stick with the notch for one more year as the Pro models make a shift to the new design.
The next iPhone lineup is expected to come out at its usual schedule sometime in September. Rumours suggest that Apple could be dropping the ‘mini’ iPhone this year in favour of a larger iPhone 14 Max.
