Apple iPhone 14 to feature 48MP camera; iPhone 15 to have periscope lens: Ming-Chi Kuo

Highlights
  • iPhone 14 to reportedly feature a 48MP primary camera, up from 12MP on current iPhones.
  • iPhone 15 could be the first iPhone to have a periscope zoom lens.
  • These upgrades are expected to bring significant camera performance improvements.

iPhone 13 series is technically the same as the iPhone 12 lineup, except for slight improvements in optics and the new A15 Bionic chipset. The upcoming iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 models, however, are expected to bring significant camera upgrades, according to a report from 9to5Mac citing noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The 2022 iPhone is rumoured to arrive with a 48MP primary camera, which is a massive improvement over the existing 12MP sensor. On the other hand, the iPhone 15 series in 2023 is said to come with a periscope lens. These enhancements are touted to bring vast camera performance improvements.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts the iPhone 14 will bring significant camera improvements, starting with a large camera sensor. This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about the 2022 iPhone’s camera. The analyst originally predicted the iPhone 14 will come with a 48MP sensor back in April. He also suggested there will be support for 8K video recording, which is a jump from 4K 60fps. Considering how impressive the video footage from iPhones is, we expect the 8K video recording to be groundbreaking. The large megapixel count is also expected to provide better results, with additional details in photos and videos. We can also expect improvements to low-light performance.

Interestingly, another analyst Jeff Pu recently corroborated with details shared by Kuo and predicted a 48MP wide-angle camera on iPhone 14. However, Pu stated that he expects the 48MP sensors only on the iPhone 14 Pro models as the regular iPhone 14 variants may still get the standard 12MP ultra-wide angle lens and a telephoto camera.

Moving to iPhone 15, they’re set to arrive in the second half of 2023 and will have a periscope lens. However, the periscope lens was also initially expected to be a part of the iPhone 13 series and was later pushed to arrive in 2022. So, we’ll know for sure when the iPhone 15 is actually launched.
