Surprise! Apple to finally allow DIY repairs of iPhones and MacBooks
Apple is doing something unexpected! The Cupertino giant never made its parts available for third-part repairs as it wants to have complete control over the quality of after-sale service. However, that will change soon as Apple is now allowing DIY (do it yourself) repairs for iPhones and MacBooks. It is calling it the “Self Service Repair” programme and will launch “early next year” in the US first and then expand to other countries. The company plans to start selling parts, tools, and even instructions on how to repair Apple products at home without any service centre supervision or third-part repairs. iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 will be the first products to get DIY repairs, followed by M1-powered MacBooks.
Apple will let you replace iPhone’s display, battery, and camera at first. However, other part options will be added later. As said, this is a huge shift for the company who has been reluctant for DIY repairs outside of its own stores. It even walked on the software that prevented Face ID from working if the screen on the iPhone 13 is replaced. The DIY program is apparently only meant for “individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices“. It’s good that Apple is finally allowing customers who are comfortable performing any repairs on their own to do so. TechCrunch reports these repairs won’t void the device’s warranty but any damage during the repair might.
The change will further help Apple in the repair process. The company says that it plans to sell more than 200 individual parts and tools. It will also offer manuals to customers so they can review them before buying the parts. Interestingly, the pricing of the parts and tools isn’t revealed at the moment. The company is offering recycling credit for returning their used parts after completing the repair.
