POCO M4 Pro 5G vs POCO M3 Pro 5G: Is the new POCO phone a worthy upgrade?
The POCO M3 Pro 5G was unveiled almost six months ago and its replacement, the POCO M4 Pro 5G was finally launched this week. The smartphone is not a complete redesign over the POCO M3 Pro but is more sort of refinement over its predecessor. The new POCO M4 Pro has most of the features of its sibling, with some key improvements as well. Both the smartphones come with a similar type of display and design with some key differences elsewhere. Therefore, we’ve decided to compare the two phones and find out whether the new POCO M4 Pro is a solid upgrade or not.
POCO M3 Pro 5G vs POCO M4 Pro 5G: price
Starting with the price the POCO M3 Pro already retails for Rs 14,999 in India for the 4GB RAM and 64 GB storage variant. For 16,499 you can have the 6GB RAM, 128GB storage variant.
The POCO M4 Pro 5G on the other hand is currently only available in Europe with a starting price tag of EUR 229 (roughly Rs. 19,600) for the 4GB RAM, 64GB storage variant. The smartphone also comes in a 6GB + 128GB configuration that has a price tag of EUR 249 (roughly Rs. 21,300). We can expect a lower price tag if and when it launches in India.
POCO M3 Pro 5G vs POCO M4 Pro 5G: design and display
In terms of design, both smartphones are pretty similar from the front. The POCO M3 Pro sports a 6.5-inch FHD+ LCD DotDisplay, 1100 nits brightness, and a 90Hz refresh rate with the DynamicSwitch feature. The device weighs 190 grams. It’s available in three different colour options namely Cool Blue, POCO Yellow, and Power Black. The smartphone comes with the usual side-mounted fingerprint scanner.
On the other hand, The POCO M4 Pro 5G is built around a 6.6-inch FHD+ DotDisplay with a 90Hz refresh rate and 450 nits typical brightness. The panel also has a touch sampling rate of up to 240Hz and can switch its refresh rate between 50Hz, 60Hz, and 90Hz, because of the same DynamicSwitch Feature. The phone comes in the same Power Black, Cool Blue, and POCO Yellow colours options and side-mounted fingerprint scanner.
The phones look different when looking at the back. The POCO M3 Pro gets a corner vertical black strip that houses the camera system and POCO branding. On the POCO M4 Pro, however, you get a large black patch covering the top quarter of the panel.

The POCO M3 Pro 5G is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC coupled with Mali-G57 MC2 GPU, up to 6GB RAM, and 128GB UFS 2.2 internal storage that is further expandable via a microSD card. It packs a 5,000mAh battery with 18W fast-charging support, though we get a 22.5W charger in the box. The POCO M3 Pro has triple cameras at the back with a 48MP primary sensor, a 2MP depth unit, and a 2MP macro lens for close-up shots. The handset also has an 8MP snapper on the front for selfies. Connectivity features include 5G, dual-band 4G, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, and USB Type-C port for charging and data transfers.
The POCO M4 Pro 5G, on the other hand, is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 810 SoC, along with up to 6GB of RAM. There is also a Dynamic RAM Expansion technology that is claimed to expand the RAM to up to 8GB using the built-in storage. For photos and videos, the Poco M4 Pro 5G offers a dual rear camera setup that houses a 50MP primary sensor and an 8MP ultra-wide shooter with a 119-degree field of view lens. It has a 16MP selfie camera sensor at the front. The POCO M4 Pro 5G packs a 5,000mAh battery with 33W fast charging. Connectivity options include 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS/ A-GPS, Infrared (IR) blaster, NFC, FM radio, USB Type-C, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Both the smartphones come with Android 11 out of the box, with MIUI 12.5 on top of it. The POCO M3 Pro though came with MIUI 12 from its launch date but is now upgradable to MIUI 12.5 at the time of writing this.
POCO M3 Pro 5G vs POCO M4 Pro 5G: verdict
Our verdict is that the POCO M4 Pro 5G is a better smartphone between the two and a pretty solid upgrade. The POCO M4 Pro comes with faster-charging technology, better cameras, and a much faster chipset in comparison to the POCO M3 Pro. The POCO M3 Pro 5G, on the other hand, is cheaper than the M4 Pro (compared to its European pricing) and it is readily available in India. We will have to wait and see if the POCO M4 Pro launches in India at a competitive price point.
