Motorola, Xiaomi phones with 200MP cameras tipped to launch in 2022; Samsung fans may have to wait longer

Highlights
  • Samsung unveiled its 200MP ISOCELL HP1 camera sensor in September this year.
  • Motorola is expected to be the first smartphone brand to use this camera sensor, followed by Xiaomi.
  • Samsung reportedly will not adopt the camera sensor till 2023.

Samsung has made great strides in the mobile camera sensors department over the last decade, with the introduction of 64MP camera sensors and the launch of 108MP camera sensors being notable achievements in the recent past. After a series of speculations, Samsung in September unveiled the world’s first 200MP ISOCELL HP1 camera sensor. Now, famed tipster Ice Universe has said that the 200MP Samsung sensor will make its way into smartphones as early as next year, but not on a Galaxy smartphone. This contradicts the rumour that Samsung Galaxy S22 will be one of the smartphones to feature the 200MP ISOCELL camera sensor.

According to Ice Universe, Motorola will be the first one to use the 200MP sensor, followed by Xiaomi that will be using it in the second half of 2022. On the other hand, Samsung fans will have to wait till 2023 to see a Galaxy smartphone adopt to the high-res camera; the Galaxy S23 Ultra could be among the first Samsung smartphones to use this camera sensor.

Motorola previously launched smartphones with 108MP primary cameras such as the Moto G60Moto Edge 20Moto Edge 20 Fusion, and the Moto Edge 20 Pro. We will have to wait and see what Motorola has in the store for us later this year or by next year. Xiaomi has also launched some smartphones with 108MP primary camera sensor, but it would be interesting to see its first smartphone with the 200MP camera sensor by next year.

Samsung 200MP camera sensor detailed

The ISOCELL HP1 is a 1/1.22-inch large sensor with 200MP resolution and native pixel size of 0.64μm. It supports 2×2 (50MP images with 1.28µm pixels) and 4×4 pixel binning, 12.5MP images with up to 2.65μm pixels modes for higher light sensitivity in low-light conditions and for ultra-clear images even when viewing an object from far off.

The camera sensor in bright conditions is claimed to offer detailed images with a wide dynamic range and up to 8K 30fps video support. It can even record 4K 120fps slow-motion videos with a wide field of view. It further supports multisampling, which reads out each pixel several times and averages them.

Staggered HDR shorts, medium and long exposures shorts also combine to boost dynamic range to 100dB. Its smart ISO works by combining a low and high ISO shot into one for better and clear low light photography. Smart ISO Pro further extends this feature to video capture as well, which allows the sensor to record HDR video with fewer motion artifacts.
