6G launch in India promised by 2024, even though 5G is yet to arrive
Fast cellular connectivity has become a necessity and the growing 5G technology is a big push towards that. However, India is yet to see 5G and its launch has been pushed to 2022. Now, the Minister of Communication, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has boldly claimed that India will be indigenously developing and deploying 6G technology by the end of 2023 or 2024. If true, this can bring India to the forefront of the game and will consequently result in improvements being made in various fields as networking speeds advance majorly. India also has plans to adopt and implement home-grown technologies when it comes to the growth and spread of 5G across the country.
India to implement home-grown 6G networks by the end of 2023
Comments on the telecom-related aspects and specifically on fast connectivity standards of 5G and 6G have been made by Minister of Communication Ashwini Vaishnaw while speaking on ‘New Technology and the Green Economy: Two Trends Shaping a New India?’. This is the fourth installment of a series being organised by the Financial Times and The Indian Express and it revolves around agenda-setting webinars. Ashwini Vaishnaw also added that the scientists and engineers currently invested in the projects have already been provided with the necessary go-ahead and permissions to realise their efforts.
“6G development has already started. That will be seen somewhere in the timeframe 2024 or 2023-end. That is the direction in which we are going. We will have designed in India telecom software for running the networks, manufactured in India telecom equipment, served in India telecom networks which can go global,” said the minister.

The ministry also aims to gain a stronghold of the upcoming 5G boom in India by promotion and use of indigenously developed 5G technology. The timeline for 5G is also set with the auctions for spectrums happening in the second quarter of 2022 followed by the completion of development of the core home-grown technologies by the third quarter of 2022.
“A reference has been made to TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) for 5G spectrum auctions. They have already started the consultation process. The process should end somewhere in the February-March time frame in the coming year. Then the auction process will be in Q2 of calendar year 2022,” the minister added.
