Apple Watch Series 7 features tipped: bigger screens, new watch faces, and more

Highlights
  • Apple Watch Series 7 to come in 41mm and 45mm sizes.
  • Apple Watch Series 7 displays will be 16% larger than their predecessors.
  • The upcoming Apple smartwatch will come with new watch faces.

The Apple Watch Series 7 due for launch this year is likely to get a bigger display with up to 16 percent more screen real estate compared to Series 6, a new Bloomberg report suggests. Earlier, it was reported that the Apple Watch Series 7 will benefit from newer watch faces specifically made to utilise the larger display, the details of which are now clearer. The newer Series 7 will get two size options – 41mm and 45mm. Both these are a notch bigger than last year’s Apple Watch Series 6, which came in 40mm and 44mm case sizes. The Apple Watch Series 7 is scheduled to be launched in Apple’s September event which will also consist of the new 2021 iPhone lineup launch.

Apple Watch Series 7 will be bigger, bolder

The Apple Watch Series 7 will succeed the Series 6 that debuted last year and hopes to build on where its predecessor left off. The Apple Watch Series 7 will have new dimensions, according to Bloomberg. The Apple Watch Series 7 will get a 1.9-inch screen on its 45mm model as compared to 1.78-inch on earlier 44mm models. The 45mm model on the Apple Watch Series 7 will also feature 16 percent more pixels at 396 x 484 pixels up from Apple Watch Series 6’s 368 x 448 pixels.

The Apple Watch Series 7 will get new watch faces tailor-made for the larger display. The new watch faces are likely to be called Modular Max, Continuum, and a new world time face:

  • Modular Max: This new watch face will do a lot more than the previous Infograph Modular watch face, and will be able to show detailed, large, and small complications.
  • Continuum: It will change based on the time flow and the current hour.
  • World time watch face: This allows users to take a glimpse of all 24 time zones simultaneously. An external dial will display the time zones while the inner one will show different locations. Both analogue and digital iterations of the same will be available, similar to ones popularised by Patek Philippe, Breitling, and Vacheron Constantin.

Additionally, Apple will be developing special watch faces for Nike and Hermes edition of the Apple Watch Series 7. The Hermes watch face has been designed with “numbers that change hour by hour” and a Nike watch face that contains numbers that move based on the motion of your body. That said it is unlikely that the Apple Watch Series 7 will be benefitting from any new health upgrades. There however will be a faster processor as well as a newer, flatter design language overall.

Apple however has run into a bit of soup when comes to the Apple Watch Series 7 as reported by both Nikkei and Bloomberg. According to their reports, small-scale production of the Apple Watch Series 7 had begun but it encountered “critical challenges in reaching satisfactory production performance.” Production, as a result, was “temporarily halted.” In the meantime, suppliers and Apple will iron out the manufacturing errors before hitting full-scale production.
