OPPO talks about 6G technology benefits while India waits for 5G rollout

Highlights
  • OPPO has released a white paper on 6G technology.
  • The company talks about an AI-Cube as a way to allow 6G networks to become self-optimised.
  • 5G network rollout in India is yet to begin.

OPPO has unveiled its first 6G white paper, called 6G AI-Cube Intelligent Networking. The company explains the technology benefits of 6G network with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). In a release sent to the media, the company said it has “established a pre-research team to conduct preliminary research on 6G service and technology requirements, key technologies, and system features.” While OPPO looks towards 6G, people in India are still waiting for the 5G network rollout.

According to OPPO, 6G will “reshape the way people interact with AI, allowing AI to become a truly public-serving technology that can be used by everyone.” The company envisions that smart devices will offer new immersive experiences with the help of 6G. After all, the next-generation connectivity will offer even faster speeds and lower latency compared to what 5G offers right now.

OPPO gives an example of autonomous or self-driving vehicles. In this sector, 6G networks will be able to provide the most appropriate AI algorithm and optimal communications connection based on the location of the vehicle and the current physical environment (time of day, weather, etc). “The vehicle will be able to immediately download and run AI algorithms that have been trained by countless other vehicles and devices, allowing the vehicle to provide the safest and most comfortable journey for the passenger.”

According to OPPO, employing large and generalised AI algorithms is hindered due to the limited computing power and storage capacity of smart devices. Meanwhile, specialised AI capable of running on these devices is unable to meet the data demands of users. With 6G network, however, AI domain will be able to take on multiple roles. OPPO believes that 6G devices can be allocated to an AI domain based on location and requirements of the device. This will allow for the most suitable AI algorithm that can deliver the desired service.

OPPO’s 6G white paper looks optimistic but it will be a long time before we can see the company’s idea in action. 5G rollout in India is yet to begin and we expect Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea to launch 5G services later this year or in early 2022. 6G as a standard can only be expected in the second half of this decade.
