Airtel offers Rs 49 recharge plan for free, double benefits on Rs 79 plan
Airtel has announced that it will give away its low-cost Rs 49 plan for free to underprivileged subscribers. While the Rs 49 recharge plan may not offer a whole lot in terms of benefits (Talktime of Rs 38 and 100MB mobile data for 28 days), it should come as a lifesaver for many, as it will give them a fighting chance to book their slot for the vaccine. The talktime will come in handy, too. Airtel says that it plans to help over 55 million people, spending Rs 270 crore in the process. It goes without saying that these benefits are only for existing Airtel subscribers. The official blog post doesn’t clarify just what qualifies as low-income, either, but had the following to say:
“Through this gesture Airtel will empower over 55 million customers, mostly in rural areas, to stay connected and have access to critical information when needed.”
Airtel will also double the benefits offered on its affordable Rs 79 plan, which gets you 128 minutes of talktime, 200MB mobile data, Rs 0.60 per minute for local, STD, and landline calls, valid for 28 days. With double the benefits, users stand to gain 256 minutes of talktime and 400MB of Mobile data. The tariff and validity will likely remain the same, though.

Airtel hasn’t specified exactly when these plans will go into effect, nor how it plans to help the aforementioned 55 million users get access to the Rs 49 plan. While the Rs 79 plan could be accessible via the website/app, things could get a lot more complicated for the Rs 49 plan. Ideally, Airtel should tell us more about it in the coming days.
