While the OnePlus 9 comes with the latest Snapdragon 888 chipset and an upgraded camera set up in partnership with Hasselblad, the overall package seems a bit lacklustre, considering its Rs 49,999 asking price. The deal feels even worse when you take wireless charging into account, which is missing on the India version of the OnePlus 9. Considering all this, we feel that the OnePlus 9R, priced at Rs 39,999, is a far better option for most people. So, if you are looking to upgrade your smartphone this year, forget the OnePlus 9. In this article, we tell you why the OnePlus 9R is a far better option for you.

Why OnePlus 9R is a better buy than the OnePlus 9

As you read ahead, you will understand why I am saying that the OnePlus 9 is not a phone that you should not spend your hard-earned money on, and I am confident that I will convince you by the end of this article. So, let’s get started, shall we?

OnePlus 9 has a plastic frame

The first downgrade that the OnePlus 9 makes is in its construction. Instead of using aluminium or stainless steel, which are staple smartphone materials at Rs 50,000 price point, the OnePlus 9 uses a plastic frame. On the other hand, the OnePlus 9R brings an aluminium frame despite costing Rs 10,000 less than the OnePlus 9. There’s no logical reason why the OnePlus 9 has a plastic frame other than that it makes OnePlus 9 Pro look better.

OnePlus 9 has no optical image stabilisation

The biggest downgrade that the OnePlus 9 has is the absence of OIS. OnePlus 9 has to be the first smartphone at Rs 50,000 price point in recent times that doesn’t come with OIS. I mean, even the budget-friendly OnePlus Nord comes with OIS. You might think that the upgraded camera sensor and Hasselblad partnership might make up for the absence of OIS, but you would be wrong. OIS not only helps with video stabilisation but also plays a huge role in improving low-light photos. And if you compare the videos and photos taken with the OnePlus 9R that comes with OIS against OnePlus 9, you will prefer the former.

OnePlus 9 Indian variant is an even worse deal than the global variant

If the OnePlus 9’s shortcomings were not enough to put you off from buying this phone, the company’s decision to further nerf the Indian version of the OnePlus 9 should do the job. The only upgrade worth mentioning with the OnePlus 9 is the wireless charging support, which is absent in the Indian version of the smartphone. Also, the global OnePlus 9 supports more than 15 different 5G bands, while the Indian version supports only two.

OnePlus 9R goes head-to-head with OnePlus 9 in all departments

Keeping Snapdragon 888 aside for a moment, you will see that the OnePlus 9R has all the features that the OnePlus 9 brings to the table. It has the same 6.5-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, the same 4500mAh battery with 65W warp charging support, the same front camera, and the same under-display fingerprint sensor.

In fact, the only two real upgrades that the OnePlus 9 brings are the Snapdragon 888 processor and the new primary camera set-up at the back. We have already discussed how, despite the new main and ultra-wide lenses, the upgraded camera set-up is crippled by the absence of OIS. So, basically, the only upgrade that you get is the Snapdragon 888 processor.

Is OnePlus 9 worth Rs 10,000 more than the OnePlus 9R?

The short answer is no. By paying Rs 10,000 extra, the only upgrade you get is the Snapdragon 888 processor. Yes, you will get a 15-20 per cent better performance than the Snapdragon 870 that is powering the OnePlus 9R, but you won’t see any difference in day-to-day life. The Snapdragon 870 is plenty capable and can handle anything you throw at it without breaking a sweat. The Snapdragon 888 is certainly not worth the extra money that OnePlus is asking for the OnePlus 9. And when you consider the downgrades like the absence of OIS and wireless charging, the deal becomes even worse.

As you can see, there’s no reason why you should spend Rs 49,999 on the OnePlus 9. So, forget the OnePlus 9, and buy the OnePlus 9R instead.
