9 tech companies and CEOs helping India in COVID crisis

The COVID-19 pandemic in India is at its worst ever. The country witnessed 3,52,991 new COVID-19 cases and 2,812 deaths due to coronavirus on Sunday. While the government is doing its best to provide health care supplies to hospitals, people are helping each other, especially through social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter, to procure oxygen tanks and necessary medicines. However, that’s not the only help that India is getting. Big tech companies such as Google, Microsoft, Xiaomi, Amazon, CRED, Paytm, and Zomato, and their CEOs are coming forward to help India get through the COVID-19 crisis by offering funds, medical supplies, and tech support.

Google announces Rs 135 crore donation for COVID-19 crisis in India

Earlier today, the CEO of Google and Alphabet, Sundar Pichai, announced that the tech giant will be donating Rs 135 crore ($18 million USD) in funding to India to help the country in the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

According to the brand, the funding includes two grants. The first grant totals Rs 20 crore, which the company will be giving to GiveIndia to provide cash assistance to families that were hit the hardest in this pandemic. The second grant (of unspecified amount) will go to UNICEF to help India get urgent media supplies, including oxygen and testing equipment. Moreover, Google will offer Rs 112 crore worth of Ad Grants to local health authorities and nonprofits to get the coverage they need in this pandemic.

Xiaomi India pledges to donate Rs 3 crore to India for oxygen concentrators

Xiaomi, India’s leading smartphone brand, announced on Thursday that the company will be donating over Rs 3 crore to India to procure 1000+ oxygen concentrators. According to the CEO of the brand, Manu Kumar Jain, these oxygen concentrators will be donated to hospitals and state governments where the need is the highest.

Along with it, Xiaomi is also partnering with GiveIndia to raise Rs 1,00,00,000 (INR 1 crore) to help frontline COVID-19 warriors in the country. The donation page will go live on Xiaomi’s official website for India soon. 

Microsoft will help India procure oxygen concentrators 

Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, announced earlier today that it will support the country in purchasing critical oxygen concentration devices. Nadella also announced that the company will use its voice, resources, and technology to aid relief efforts. The Indian-American CEO also took it to Twitter to thank the US government for helping India in this crisis.

Amazon will offer funds to procure oxygen concentrators

Amazon India is collaborating with ACT Grants, Temasek Foundation, and Pune Platform fore COVID-19 Response (PPCR) along with other partners to urgently lift more than 8,000 oxygen concentrators and 500 bi-level positive airway pressure (BiPAP) machines from Singapore (via Mint).

The e-commerce giant will bear the cost of airlifting the oxygen concentrators and BiPAP machines through Air India and other national carriers. Amazon India will also manage the movement of these pieces of equipment from Airports to identified hospitals and institutions. Along with it, the company will work with the Indian government on the process to get these machines into the country. The first consignment was expected to land in Mumbai on April 25th and the remaining consignments are expected to reach India by April 30th.

Paytm to raise Rs 10 crore for India’s coronavirus crisis

Paytm’s CEO, Vijay Shekhar Sharma, announced on Sunday that the Paytm Foundation aims to raise Rs 2 crore through donations to source oxygen concentrators. Paytm said that it will donate the same amount of money that people donate to Paytm for the cause. For example, if you donate Rs 1,000 on Paytm for the COVID-19 pandemic, Paytm will add additional Rs 1,000 to the cause.

On Monday afternoon, Paytm announced that it has almost reached the Rs 2 crore target and it now aims to raise up to Rs 10 crore. You can donate to PayTM Foundation for India’s COVID-19 crisis through this page. According to the CEO, Paytm has sourced supplies of different sizes of oxygen concentrators.

Zomato aims to raise Rs 50 crore for coronavirus pandemic in India

Deepinder Goyal, the founder of Zomato, announced on Sunday that the brand’s not-for-profit organization, Zomato Feeding India, has kickstarted the “Help Save My India” project in collaboration with Delhivery. It aims to raise Rs 50 crores to source oxygen concentrators and related supplies to help hospitals and families in India. CRED aims to raise funds for 1 billion liters of oxygen

The founder of CRED, Kunal Shah, tweeted on Monday afternoon that the company aims to raise funds for procuring 1 billion liters of oxygen. It has partnered with Milaap to ensure that contributions reach hospitals in need. However, the most interesting part about CRED’s initiative is that people can contribute towards the company’s COVID-19 cause by donating CRED coins that they already have in their CRED accounts.

Ehthereum co-founder donates 4.5 crores worth cryptocurrency

Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ehtereum cryptocurrency, has shared proof of transfer of 100 ETH and 100 MKR, which is worth approximately Rs 4.5 crores, for use in COVID-19 relief in India. Buterin thanked Sandeep Nailwal for organizing the COVID-19 relief fund. According to Sandeep, the funds will be used to procure oxygen, food, and possibly for covering the cost of vaccines for poor people in India. 

Vinod Khosla to fund hospitals needing medical supplies to fight COVID

The co-founder of Sun Microsystem, Vinod Khosla, announced on Sunday that he is willing to fund hospitals that need money for importing oxygen and other media supplies in India to fight against COVID. He urged public hospitals and NGOs to come forward.

As soon as Khosla made the announcement on Twitter, many non-profit organizations, non-government organizations, and private initiatives such as Manjinder Singh Sirsa (President of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee), the Cancer Aid Society, and Hemkunt Foundation sought the CEO for help.

The announcements for donations from these tech companies will not only save the lives of many people in India but will also give a ray of hope to people in the country that they are not alone and help is on its way. Hopefully, more brands will make come forward in the coming days extending their support towards India’s coronavirus situation.
