Realme 8 was announced in India on Wednesday alongside the Realme 8 Pro. The phones succeed the Realme 7 and Realme 7 Pro from last year. At a starting price of Rs 14,999, the Realme 8 comes with specifications like the MediaTek Helio G95 SoC, AMOLED display, a 5,000mAh battery, and 64MP quad cameras. Now, if some of these specs sound familiar it is because the Realme 7 offers them as well, except for the AMOLED display. So, the Realme 8 comes as a marginal upgrade over its predecessor instead of offering major improvements. I reviewed the Realme 8, and in this piece, I will tell you three reasons why the Realme 8 is a good buy and three reasons why you can skip this phone.
3 reasons to buy the Realme 8
Attractive AMOLED display
The only noticeable upgrade worth talking about is the display. While the Realme 7 comes with an LCD panel, the Realme 8 upgrades to an AMOLED screen. With an AMOLED panel, you get to enjoy punchier colours and deeper blacks. The contrast is better as is the brightness of the screen. Overall, you can a good viewing experience on the Realme 8 for playing games and consuming media.
Good cameras
I was quite satisfied with the cameras on the Realme 8. The phone comes equipped with a quad-camera system that includes a 64MP primary sensor, an 8MP wide-angle lens, and a couple of 2MP sensors. The main camera delivers good-looking photos in daylight, with bright and attractive colours and plenty of sharpness. The other camera sensors work as well as one can expect from a phone in this segment, which is not saying much. The Realme 8 also manages to take decent low light photos.
Decent gaming performance
The Realme 8 comes with a tried and tested MediaTek Helio G95 chipset. While we would have liked to see a different and newer processor under the hood, the MediaTek Helio G95 will keep you happy with the kind of performance it offers. The phone delivers a smooth and lag-free gaming experience and it rarely stutters while multitasking. The chipset is capable of handling heavy workloads, but it will be interesting to see how well it ages over time.
3 reasons to skip the Realme 8
Not a major upgrade from Realme 7
The Realme 8 can definitely be skipped if you are a Realme 7 user. Excluding the display, the two phones are pretty identical. The Realme 7, in fact, offers a better design in my personal opinion thanks to its clean matt finish rear panel. It also gets a 90Hz refresh rate as opposed to the standard 60Hz refresh rate on the Realme 8. I feel the Realme 8 does offer a leap in upgrades over its predecessor, which was needed given the competition in this segment.
Hardware could have been better
As a successor to the Realme 7, the Realme 8 could have improved the hardware in some areas. We have seen the company launch phones like the Realme Narzo 30 Pro and Realme X7 that define themselves as affordable 5G phones and powerful performers. However, the Realme 8 does not have that one wow factor that sets it apart from the crowd. The phone could have launched with 50W or 65W fast charging support or a 120Hz AMOLED display.
Competition has gone ahead
While the Realme 8’s specifications aren’t bad when seen alone, the competition this year is getting stiff. Xiaomi has launched phones like the Redmi Note 10 and Redmi Note 10 Pro that offer compelling features at affordable prices. While the Redmi Note 10 Pro is Rs 1,000 more than the Realme 8, it also offers a lot more value such as a 120Hz AMOLED display and an arguably better design and performance.
