ASUS ROG Phone 5 vs OnePlus 9: specifications

Both the ASUS ROG Phone 5 and OnePlus 9 come with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G SoC with Adreno 660 GPU. While the former also has a variant with 18GB RAM and 512GB storage, the latter’s high-model packs 12GB RAM and 256GB onboard storage that isn’t expandable. However, both use LPDDR5 and UFS 3.1. On the software front, the ASUS ROG Phone 5 boots Android 11-based ROG UI custom skin on top, while the OnePlus 9 runs on the acclaimed OxygenOS 11 based on Android 11 as well.

The ASUS phone has a mammoth 6,000mAh battery unit inside it with 65W fast-charging support, the OnePlus 9 has a 4,500mAh battery with the same 65W charging output. Neither phones support wireless charging support. However, the OnePlus 9 model in the US and Europe enjoys a 15W capacity. Both the phones have an in-display fingerprint sensor for security, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2 and 5G connectivity.

ASUS ROG Phone 5 vs OnePlus 9: display and design

OnePlus 9 arrive with a punch-hole design on the front for the selfie camera and narrow bezels. The power and alert slider are on the right, while the volume rocker is present on the left. The top section has a secondary microphone for noise cancellation. The speaker grille, USB Type-C port, primary microphone and SIM tray section can be found at the bottom. The rear is where the square-camera module is present and will house triple sensors, an LED flash and laser autofocus. OnePlus 9 flaunts a 6.55-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with 1,080×2,400 pixels resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, 20:9 aspect ratio, sRGB, Display P3, and Corning Gorilla Glass layer for protection.

On the flip side, ASUS ROG Phone 5 is targeted at mobile gamers and the design is totally niche. It has the usual bezel-touting display on the front instead of a punch-hole or a fancy pop-up mechanism. The ROG Phone 5 has RGB lighting at the back, a slight camera bump that doesn’t sit flat on a surface and the high-end Pro and Ultimate models get a monochrome PMOLED display to surface notifications, etc. ROG Phone 5 has a side charging port and dual front-facing speakers. ASUS ROG Phone 5 flaunts a 6.78-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with 2,448 x 1,080 pixels resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, 300Hz touch sampling rate, HDR10+ support, 20.4:9 aspect ratio, and 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.

ASUS ROG Phone 5 vs OnePlus 9: camera

The ASUS ROG Phone 5 has a triple camera setup at the back with a 64MP (f/1.8 aperture) Sony IMX686 sensor, a 13MP (f/2.4 aperture) 125-degree wide-angle sensor, and a 5MP macro sensor. There is a 24MP snapper on the front for selfies and video calling. Considering it’s a gaming phone, the cameras are not really at the centre stage here.

OnePlus 9 has triple cameras with Hasselblad optimisations at the back, with a 48MP (f/1.8 aperture) Sony IMX689 sensor with 7P Lens, EIS, a 50MP Sony IMX766 ultra-wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture and a 2MP monochrome lens. On the front, it has a 16MP Sony IMX471 snapper for selfies and video chats. The cameras on the OnePlus 9 bring significant upgrades over the predecessor. There is a new Pro mode that’s co-developed with Hasselblad, a revamped new user interface, among others.

ASUS ROG Phone 5 vs OnePlus 9: conclusion

OnePlus 9 and ASUS ROG Phone 5 are the latest flagships from the brand and they do share some identical specifications, including the chipset, RAM/Storage, OS, and fast-charging output. However, the OnePlus 9 has a slight edge, thanks to its well-worked out software that should get regular updates, Hasselblad cameras and a premium design. On the other hand, the ASUS ROG Phone 5 has its share of strengths such as a massive 6,000mAh battery, 144Hz AMOLED display, and accessory support for a proper gaming experience. But the cameras sound pretty ordinary, how well the brand will offer after-sale service and future software updates are something that remains sceptical. So unless you are a gamer, we suggest you go with OnePlus 9.
