Indian Gadget Awards – Best Camera Phone of 2020: does the title go to iPhone 12 Pro Max or Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra?
Like every year, 2020 saw some really heady innovations in smartphone camera tech, and that has been demonstrated brilliantly by all the nominees in the Best Camera Phone of 2020 category of the Indian Gadget Awards (Voice of the Industry). The jury has spoken and we finally have a winner. As you know, this award has been adjudged by 30 prominent voices from the consumer tech industry of India. The IGA 2020 event is being co-hosted by 91mobiles, Geekyranjit, Trakin Tech, and MySmartPrice. If you’re eager to learn who the winner of the Best Camera Phone of 2020 is, the wait is finally over.
The winner of the Best Camera Phone of 2020 title is: Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max
Of the four Apple flagships launched this year, the iPhone 12 Pro Max delivers the most complete camera experience that the company has developed yet. On the phone’s back, you’ll find three 12MP cameras offering wide-angle, telephoto, and ultra-wide lenses, while there’s also a fourth sensor, a LiDAR scanner to aid with AR tasks. What distinguishes the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s camera setup from the other iPhones is something called sensor-shift stabilisation that’s present on its main shooter. This allows the sensor to float around in order to counterbalance any movement within the camera. No matter what lighting conditions, the iPhone is able to produce stunning photos. Also, the device comes with Dolby Vision HDR support for its videos, which is a first for any smartphone.
Runner-up for Best Camera Phone of 2020: Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra
The Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra is a truly magnificent phone for many reasons. One of them, of course, is its quad-camera setup that’s headlined by a 108MP wide camera, backed by a 12MP periscope-style telephoto camera and a 12MP ultra-wide camera. And this setup is just as impressive in real-life as it looks on paper. The main camera excels at delivering accurate colours, crisp sharpness, and high levels of detail. It can also capture videos in whopping 8K resolution. The telephoto camera combines its power with the phone’s other snappers to deliver 50x hybrid zoom. And then there are plenty of other useful features in this phone’s repertoire, which make it worthy of a runner-up tag in the Best Camera Phone of 2020 category.
Just to refresh your memory, here are the rest of the nominees for the Best Camera Phone of 2020:
Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra
The camera setup onboard the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is similar to that of the Note 20 Ultra, with the main difference being its adoption of a 48MP telephoto camera instead of a 12MP one. This enables a whopping 100x hybrid zoom, but the rest of the camera features of this phone are more or less same as those of the S20 Ultra.
Xiaomi Mi 10
The Xiaomi Mi 10 is another handset with a 108MP main camera. This shooter is is complemented by a 13MP ultra-wide camera and a couple of 2MP cameras for macro photography and depth sensing. Among other things, this phone is capable of capturing 8K videos at 30fps.
OnePlus 8 Pro
The OnePlus 8 Pro left us thoroughly impressed with its camera offerings this year. The phone features not one but two 48MP cameras (wide and ultra-wide), while it also carries an 8MP telephoto camera and a 5MP colour filter camera. All these, combine their powers to deliver an extremely pleasing photography and videography experience.
Vivo X50 Pro
The main highlight of the Vivo X50 Pro’s rear camera setup is its Gimbal Camera System, which actually means that the phone uses mechanical movement to achieve flexible 3D stabilisation and deliver pro-level steadiness. This applies to its 48MP main camera, which bears an extremely wide f/1.6 aperture opening.
All the nominations in this category were truly impressive in their own right, but there could only be one winner!
